    UK Gas Bonding Certification

New gas boiler install. Previously no gas in dwelling, water is plastic. So no bonding presently. No other work, boiler supply to use existing Electric Heater Circuit. What certification should be used, It's not a new circuit, so not EIC. So just Minor Works?

    Boiler circuit 16A MCB

I'm following a spark who used an existing Panel Heater circuit, for new gas boiler circuit 6 months ago. The panel heaters were removed, so it's now a dedicated boiler circuit. I'm doing an EICR. I've found a number of faults; 1. No grommet in Consumer unit knock out, used for gas bonding (It's...

    Lighting accessory borrowed CPC code.

I have a light switch where the CPC has been used for a lighting circuit and sleeved. Previously I would give this a C3 (411.3.1.1) and leave a sticker on the Consumer Unit to advise no CPC at accessory, only use class II accessories. However, the CPC from another switch the other side of the...

8 gangs of 2 way light switches - wiring

If you were wiring 8 gangs of 2 way light switches. Would you wire 8 independent circuits, so 8 no. 3 core between switches. Or would you run a live, and loop all the L1's together, then just run 8 no. 2 core between switches ?

NAPIT Certification Scheme NAPIT 18th Edition A2 books requirement ?

I've just had a call from NAPIT saying if I don't have the 18th Edition A2 book, I will fail my next assessment. I passed my 18th edition exam and have the BBB. Is this a hard sell, never had this with 17th Edition amendments, or 18th Edition A1. But they also never had new books like 18th...

    clip-on cable marker

I've just purchase Hager Dual Consumer unit. I got the attached flyer 'Join the #HagerGang' Sorry the scan is not very good, but I'm inspired by coloured L and N stickers, and clip-on cable markers. Is anyone using these, where did you get yours from?

New Consumer Unit - Fussy Customer - PV future proof

My next job is to install a new Consumer unit for a really fussy customer.........ME! My goto brand is Hager, but will look at others. I also like Wylex, but typically don't fit for customers because of price. I'm not interested in cheap, but full RCBO installation might be over the top. It...

    EICR Change of occupancy

I’m debating on a landlords forum on the use of “change of occupancy” on an EICR. A large number of landlords feel this is to much, and it should be 5 years only, they are asking their electricians not to put this, and in the main their electricians are doing as they ask. My reading of GN3...

Do you need to be CPS member to do EICR ?

This question has been raised several times in the past, I thought it was now a requirement, but there still seems to be some confusion in the industry, or at least with me. 18th Edition now says you need to be skilled to complete EICR, but that does not make CPS a requirement. NICEIC says only...

    Type 'A' RCD test results

I just installed my first type 'A' RCD. When I tested it, I was amazed by the disconnection time. It was 148ms @ 1IΔn. Okay this is less than the required 300ms, and I know I take the 5IΔn for the report, but even so, this seems high to me. Is this correct for Type A RCD, they are slower to...

Stroma Certification Scheme What RCD for 18th Edition

I'm a bit late taking my 18th edition update, I've booked for end of November and have my assessment early December. I'm gonna do a Consumer unit upgrade for assessment. I've not done one since 18th edition, been a bit quiet. So I'm looking at RCD's, I typically fit Hager, and their pre-built...

Stroma Certification Scheme Gas and Electric in same underground duct

I need to run gas and electric in underground duct in garden. This is not the supply side, it is the customer side. Wetpants says his regs say "should be 25mm apart for maintenance" I would argue "should" is not "must". Also it mentions for maintenance. You can't maintain a cable 2ft under in...

EICR Code for switch in bathroom.

I've just completed an EICR and found a switch for towel rail in bathroom. It is located outside zones. There is no RCD on this circuit, this is coded elsewhere. My first thought was as located within 3M, Reg 701.512.3 code C2 But upon reading reg properly it specifically refers to sockets. I...

Spark gone missing after EICR and no report

I've been called by a client to fix a problem exposed by EICR. Spark put new light and fan in shower, also moved shower switch above bathroom door. Customer wanted EICR, but spark got his mate to do as he can't do EICR. So I'm suspicious he's not part of CPS, below might make you think the same...

Government backs mandatory EICR's every 5 years for landlords.

Long overdue............................ The Government has backed introducing a mandatory requirement on landlords with properties in England to ensure that electrical installations in their property are inspected every five years. However, it has not provided a start date. Such a proposal...

    Protecting DNO equipment

A House of Multiple Occupation (HMO) officer inspecting a HMO for temporary accommodation has advised tenants might be tempted to play with DNO equipment as it's not in a locked cupboard. I'd be interested in your thoughts, my view is nothing to do with me, DNO install this and deem it to be...

Does my tail look big in this!

I was reading this months Professional Electrician & Installer magazine, they have a new section "Reader Gallery" where electricians have sent in pictures of their recent CU installs. They all look very nice, but none of them leave any tails in the CU, so if a cable breaks it looks like it...

    Complex Installations demand calc

I've treated myself to the IET Electrical Installation Design guide. I've been looking at section 3.5 Complex Installations. There is a calculation for calculating demand based on number of dwellings in a group. Please see picture of relevant page. Seems simple, sub domain is 66.44A, demand...

Using Type D MCB for discrimination

I've just been on phone with Hager designing domestic distribution board design. Engineer advised using Type D 63A in distribution board supplying CU to give better discrimination. Looking at tables anything over 10A on CU might also trip Type D, but it does give a better chance. So I need to...

Using adiabatic equation for CPC on SWA

I want to use the armour as my CPC but need to check it complies. The cable will be run from a SP Distribution panel to CU. As per Selection and Erection Guidance Note 1 table D10a I can see a 10mm XLPE SWA requires a 31.1mm csa to comply, but only has 26mm on 2-core. 20171231_114229828_iOS.jpg...
