A quick question regarding tails and the 3m length.
I need to move a consumer unit, however it will be around 5m from the DNO cutout. Is it acceptable to install a REC2 isolator at the meter cabinet, 3m tail length to an accessible position and then a fused main switch, followed by around 2m of...
Hi Buzz,
The new circuit would be the preferred option, however it's an unlikely one that the customer will go for (it's been brought up and they're not keen). A fused spur would surely suffice to make it compliant?
Thanks @Lucien Nunes,
In order to make this compliant then, I'd need to advise the 2.5 SWA is fed via a 13A fused spur or ideally, a new circuit run to that point for the garage feed (however this is unlikely to be a realistic option)?
Thanks,
D
Hi guys and girls,
I've come across this setup and although not exactly standard, can't fault it. What are your thoughts. I'm guessing it's just a hybrid/lollipop config.
All cable, including the SWA that runs externally to the garage is 2.5mm t&e.
A socket on the ring feeds an adaptable box...
Thanks for your responses all, I'm going to go ahead with increasing the tail size as I know the customer wants to get himself an electric car at some point and the if they're upgraded now, it will save any hassle down the line.
On another note, just while I've got you, what the hell is going...
Hi @buzzlightyear they're 16mm tails on a tncs, but the cutout fuse is 100a (I have confirmed the cutout size), if it was a 60 or 80, I would have consider reusing.
@James That's a great idea and definitely wouldn't have thought about that. I'll give it a try!
@telectrix it's an old council house and the tails are undersized unfortunately
@Wilko , it's an old build, meter box recessed in cavity, they definitely run within it then pop out through the...
Hi all,
Waiting for a bashing here, but it's something I haven't had to do until now so looking for advice on the best way to approach this.
I've been asked to replace a consumer unit for a customer but the existing meter box is recessed in the exterior wall - not uncommon I know, but not...
Quick query,
When installing a kitchen, is a cooker outlet plate a requirement (recommendation) or could I bring the heat resistant flex from the oven directly into the cooker control unit (45A switch with socket outlet)?

What are people's thoughts on running a distribution circuit behind the DNO's Cutout?
I've a consumer unit mounted with no clearance above or to the sides and I'm struggling to find a route to it easily.
There is a possible route I could use, but it would mean running the cable behind the dno...
Hi Dave,
The flexible conduit is purely cost related. I've got about 70m worth going spare and as the lady in question really doesn't have much money, I'm not charging her for it. This job will only be costed for the catenary wire and H07, plus a couple of brews and perhaps a set of trousers...
Okay,
I've had a chat with the customer this morning and now have the option to re-purpose an existing RCD protected way within the current consumer unit as the circuit used is not needed.
Given that the installation for the shed as is, will only provide for lighting and power, she's content...
Hi Buzz,
Yes, I'm not sure if it's late and I'm getting confused! :)
A fused switch (probably a 63a SP&N Fused Switch) to a sub board in the shed via the 6mm. I'm thinking it takes up less real estate in the utility room than another sub board, even a garage CU, going to a the shed CU.
Can...
Hi Gavin,
6mm is overkill, but to be honest, I have quite a bit of surplus that is just sitting there gathering dust so it's not being factored in as a cost item.
There are no unprotected spare ways in the existing board. Both splits are RCD protected and all circuits in use - I know a couple...
Hi guys and girls,
I'm newly qualified and want to confirm my method is sound before I commence any work. I'm registered with my CPS so can notify new circuits in domestic.
I have a new customer that has asked for lighting and power to the garden shed (wood construction). The existing...
