    AFDD's in Care Homes

We do have consultancy, but not for such like. The question could be put to the UK property manager, I’m just wondering what you guys have been doing or advising. I read the regs say ‘in car homes’, but does not define it further.

    AFDD's in Care Homes

I work in a care home. Recently we had some sockets installed. The Eaton DB's we have, will not accept AFDD's apparently, so the contractor fitted a AFDD in a metal module next to the DB. I understand the reasoning for AFDD's in CH's, but one socket was for Sky Q equipment in a protective...

UK Failing Apprentice - What to do

It’s different to do, but it’s often said you should treat people how you would expect them to treat you. Or how you would expect them to treat your siblings, like you would treats theirs. The trouble is we humans tend to treat others as just an object, as opposed to a person, but it is a two...

UK Failing Apprentice - What to do

Agreed, you can't just 'bin' someone. You must have justified reasons, and followed some sort of capability route.

Why would spike lights trip an MCB as if a dead short is present ?

Just select ‘What’s New’, loads to comment on there. I’ve spouted off since 2011, but I think things, technically and BS7671 have changed since then. Or do you still want to talk about the War.

Tad bad forum etiquette, there’s loads of other more recent stuff you could reply.

    Which Manufacture of Smoke Alarms

Apologies, yes purchase orders. A PO number (on a company form) gives an assurance that the contractor will get paid.

    Which Manufacture of Smoke Alarms

Nope its a cunning plan by our head of property. Their just sit next the BRK bases, where the heads have been removed, as such they come up with the replacement system.

    Which Manufacture of Smoke Alarms

Aico alarms, installed by our local contractor.

    Which Manufacture of Smoke Alarms

Ok thanks, going to have conversation with the head of property management, to recommend Aico. But they been handing out PO's like its confetti, so that will be interesting.

    Which Manufacture of Smoke Alarms

Thanks, they are a temporary measure, not ideal but better than nothing at all. These apartments still have a functioning interlinked system, which includes a radio link to our Warden Call system. Its just one or two heads have had to been removed.

    Which Manufacture of Smoke Alarms

We have a domestic fire alarm system in some leasehold properties. The existing BRK alarms are no longer available in the UK. These alarms/system are due to be replaced, but that project has hit a technical issue, and has been delayed. Some of the properties have had failed alarms, which had to...

A retired Yank from Nebraska is coming to Edinburgh on a mission trip

Does seem unusual of a project of this type, not to use a local contractor? Although I have read of UK electricians doing such work abroad, but with all the differences in materials, installation methods, testing etc, I think it would make insurance and subsequent litigation, not worth the cost...

    Lucien Nunes Electrical Engineer Extraordinaire

Only just found out the sad news. RIP Lucien. I recall him replying to a thread of mine, to which I can’t remember the content, but it was about a piece of old aluminium cable, I’d come across. He asked if he could have for his Museum. Duly sent. I also hope his MEETS can be found a place...

Dust Extractor for metabo wall chaser

I used one of those Metabo wall chasers once, with the Metabo vac. Lovely bit of kit, and hardly any dust. Vac has some sort of tamper, so it doesn't clog up. I've hired a a couple of different chaser's & vac's, and they were useless. Personally, if you've invested in the Metabo wall chaser...

    Fuse board upgrade (PRIVATE)

When I did my cu changes, most were small domestic properties, and I wouldn’t have got much work charging for a EICR, then quote for cu change. I’d inform on the risks, test old cu few days before, then carry out the new change. If it were a large property etc, then an EICR would make sense.
