How different are the shades of "brushed brass" for Varilight and Knightsbridge?
For various reasons I'm planning on using a Varilight switch on one side of the room and Knightsbridge on the other as well as Knightsbridge sockets.
Can anyone who's seen the two products side by side in "brushed...
I’m looking to change some old brass downlights. I was just after some advice. Whether they can be replaced or not. The actual lights are cemented into the ceiling as it’s a loft extension that was done 20 years ago.
I’m just hoping to update them to something more modern if possible.
New joiner and absolute respect for electricity. Being a believer in experience having been thrown across a kitchen when trying to fix a twin tub washing machine by the shock I now triple check there is no live supply on anything I work on. Also plenty of diy on classic car electrics and yes...
I read once, never seen one for sale, that there is a solid brass replacement for the standard 13A fuse in a 13A plug. This is to eliminate the fusing in the plug, which is handy when having a heavy appliance plugged in behind itself, like under worktops which are isolated and fused by an FCU...
Has anyone used a brass gland plate to earth a line of SWA glands e.g. at a DB, and had anyone such as an NICEIC inspection flag it up as non-compliant?
I am proposing to screw a flat plate of brass onto the top of the DB and mount the glands through it with their usual locknuts, A brass bolt...
After a bit of advice. Have a 630A MCCB feeding a DB, it's fed with 4 x 300mm single core, non armoured HO7 cables and a 185mm earth. The DB is GRP and plastic compression glands have been used. The main panel has an aluminium gland plate and brass A2 glands have been used, however, the lock...
I have a couple of old metal/brass lamps to which adding an earthed lampholder would be tricky (either the entry for 3 wires is VERY small or the lamp holder is integral to the lamp and is original). All of these lamps have a screw within the base which appear to be for an earth wire - is this...
Hi all,
Need a brass bell push for a job, can anyone recommend one that they've used and has held up for a length of time. I'm still haunted by the old round byron ones that used to get fitted on site when I used to do all the snagging when I was on the books. Was forever going back tweaking...
Hi all,
I’m trying to identify the brand of accessories in the attached pic please. It’s brushed brass with the brush lines going horizontally... I’ve only found ones with vertical brushed lines so far.
Cheers
Andy
Hi All, the story so far : Customer has asked me to make her old brass table lamp work. How hard could it be? No earth, so first step was some new 3 core flex and a brass lamp holder that's got an earth point. An inline switch and I'm away. But no, the new flex won't fit up the stem of the lamp...
got a meter cupboard to rewire this week and will be removing old MEM switch gear 3P 63A and SP 63A switch fuses to a new cupboard and will be connecting it to a new ryefield. I am replacing the MEM switchgear as its rusted and contains asbestos. Were using a 63A KMF for the SP circuit I...
Brass Dolly Switch Installation?
I want to install a few of these switches in a newly rewired victorian style house but i'm having issues trying to come up with a solution for installing them.
I need to mount them without compromising the fronts and the back is just flush with no fixing points...
Hi there,I am in need of a bit of assistance with trying to trace a make for these sockets. They are flatplate antique brass I think but no idea of who makes them. I need to source one as they have a faulty one.
Many thanks in anticipation,
Dave.
Hi All,
i have a lady that's wants some old antique looking brass wall lights fitted, but they have no earthing terminal on them. Would it be acceptable to solder an earth conductor on them, as she doesn't want them drilled under any circumstances ?
thanks in advance for your help
Hi all

Looked at a favour for my auntie, dimmer switch smelling burnt. 10 x 35 / 50 w on each gang, and switch rated at 250 w. Her electrican can' t see the problem says its cheap switches. Need a 500 w dimmer for safety sakes. Wholesalers only got 400w 2 gang or 1000 w single. Dosnt want to...
Hamilton brass sockets and light switches from a previous install .I had put 20 new metal switches in my last place e which was an upgraded pub new building converted into flats. The wiring was top notch hence I took the risk on putting those in but my new place the story is not good.dodgy...
