Chaps, if the inverter can take the voltage and wattage etc of an array as 1 string what are the reasons other than differences in panel shading / orientation / pitch to split an array into more than 1 string?

Not many reasons to split - inverters work better with the higher voltages, generally.
You do start hitting the limits of what the standard ranges of dc isolators will cope with though.

no problem with isolators to 1000vdc limit of most inverter mppt ranges
string output only as good as its weakeast link or module
snow , leaves , bird **** , shading
sometimes smaller strings are better
