We've got a customer who is losing 10% from the inverter to the generation meter and I can't for the life of me think why? The cable is 4mm and runs 20m, we're going to upgrade that to 6mm which will reduce the loss a bit but where is the rest going?

Any ideas??

my first thought would be a misreading rather than an actual loss. Doubt you've done it but I'd expect to see something like that if the meter was wired the wrong way round and then sorted out a bit later. Never heard of it by that much, but maybe the inverter reading is off? Or even the gen meter.

How many amps?
Perhaps a bad connection? Any of the connections getting warm?
In rough terms, 16A on 4mm2 gives a 3V drop so about 50W, so the 4mm2 is just about OK

We had a faulty Elster 100A.

We changed eveything we could think of after Elster telling us they never go wrong. SMA were even prepaired to swap out the 4000TL inverter. We swapped out the meter and all was well.

Ours was loosing around 10-15% also. We now tell every customer to check to ensure there inverter and meter tally. Our general experiance with good set ups is that the inverter reads slightly less than the generation meter.

What did you do about the MCS certificate and the Fit application? This is an install from 6 months ago and the customer has just checked the reading on the inverter with the Elster this week - it's 200 kwh out ....
