WW1 started.....

I know from looking back at both sets of grand parents family trees that they were all affected by WW1, and some WW2

All those lost during these conflict and since must never be forgotten.

Must admit to being slightly embarrassed about WW1. I know a lot of stuff about WW2 but next to nothing about the Great War. Lest we forget

geordie, you have some left over from 1918 when you celebrated the end.

I was having a bit of a clear-out a couple of weeks ago and found a photo of me Granddad aged about 17 in his WW1 army uniform.

He was one of the "lucky" ones - he got gassed early on, was shipped back home and made a good recovery and became a Pattern maker in a foundry.

Two of my Grandmother's three brothers were not so lucky. The third was a coal miner so wasn't called up.

As well as the photo of Granddad, I found the last letters that Granny's brothers wrote to her and the telegram to her Mother bringing the news of their deaths.

To give you an example...more lives were lost in the battle of the som, than the whole of ww2
it was a tragedy, the military were stuck in there ways and sent wave after wave charging ahead only to be cut down by machine guns.

then there was the awful trench warfare where they tried to tunnel underneath eaxh others trenches
