100mm In-line Extract Fan...

Morning All...

I always fit one of these where possible (lineo 100) :

Lineo (Commercial Ventilation)

But I've got a customer coming up who is very particular and has specifically asked for a quiet fan "like they have in a hotels." (It's going in a bathroom.)

Could go and get a less powerful one but then a waste of time (6m run) as this will just trickle out.

What I find is at the grill in the bathroom ceiling is where most of the noise is created from suction, not from the actual fan unit itself ?? Catch 22 situation :thinking:

Any thoughts / recommendations please ?

You could possibly use a speed controller or maybe a larger grill or a combination, i have used the Domus supply air grill as an extract grill in the past,

If you're worried about air noise then use a larger ceiling diffuser which will reduce the velocity of the air going through it. If you think fan mechanical noise might be an issue go for a mixed-flow fan instead of an axial unit and obviously stick with a good brand name as well. If you want to reduce the noise even further then you can also use flexible ducting that's insulated. It's primarily a thermal insulation but it also works well as sonic insulation.

Use a valve rather than a grill as there is less resistance through a valve than a grill ,use a in line fan rather than a celling mounted one and position the fan as far away from the valve as possible without extending the run, use rigid 100mm ducting(insulated if its in a cold loft space) not the crappy white push your finger through stuff you get as all those ridges and waves create resistance if cant get rigid in use aluminum insulated flexible ducting as it has a more rigid profile than the white stuff.
Make sure its properly terminated on the outside to reduce resistance , and noise .

Just curious what would you recommend for a 4" inline ----> 6m run from a bathroom ?

Gave up with that white flexi crap a long time ago, usual preference is flexi insulated foil (does stink though!)

Recon I'll go for some rigid on this one then with an air valve.

A Vent Axia ACM100T good, solid , dependable , fitted loads of, if you dont need a timer use the code without the "T" on it T just means timer

Sy when you fit the valve , youll know what im talking about then youve got in in your hands, open the middle bit untill its level with the rim and then lock down the wee lock nut , been to a few where they have vibration thing going on and it either rattles or unscrews and then falls off , if they seem iffy (customer or valve) put a wee blob of nail varnish ( you can choose the colour ) on the nut and tread , give a tell tale of theyve messed with it
