Went down to the farm yesterday and they are erecting a new building approx 8mtrs from an 11Kv overhead line, the farmer comes out and says he,s been on to the network people as for the last 12 months they have been on about moving the line and he has rung them this morning and finally they are coming out to do something as he,s told them its in the way of the work.Oh dear I knew the outcome wasn.t going to be as he expected so I went to see what the fuss was about,2 lads working with a telehandler with a cage on up in the air at most 2mtrs from line.As I am telling them to stop work and come down the man from SPN arrives takes one look and went mental.I told him I was trying to stop job due to proximity to line,he produces a copy of HSE guidance notes re proximity to overhead lines, then issues them with a notice to cease work, next thing farmers son comes out and starts ranting at his dad for ringing SPN as job is now stopped, poor bloke from SPN is trying to get his paperwork signed and the lads are stood there looking rather sheepish.I ended up siding with SPN chap re H&S issues and everybody ends up arguing, would have been so funny if it wasn,t for the fact that they seemed blissfully unaware of the danger they were in.

Farmers should stick to sheep shearing.
HSE would have shut that farm down so fast they wouldnt know what day of week it was.
I wouldnt have hung around for the arguements either , just jump in van and leave the fools to it.

RARELY do I come upon a farm that isn't an electrical deathtrap, and farming just seems to have an inbred claim that health and safety doesn't apply to them. And I should know....my inlaws own a HUGE farm down here and I refuse to do work for them as I know I'd end up issuing EDN's all over the place.

Agree totally,my mate who owns it said he hasn,t got time to do everything,so I offered to sort out his h&s for him as I have lots of time now all he had to do was tell his staff that what I say goes as far as h&s issues but he doesnt seem bothered so leave him to it,at the end of the day it won,t be me in court.

UPDATE: He,s just rung me up to say the HSE have turned up to check the place, the guy said he was passing and noticed construction going on so decided to pop in,more like SPN have rung them after all it was notifiable under RIDDOR.Apparently he was unaware of that,I was going to pop down this afternoon but have decided not to bother,I dont want to get dragged into it all,he,s trying to say he was going to get his work sorted then get HSE down to give him advice about what was needed for day to day running. To late was the cry!imo

Good idea , stay away , i wouldnt want my name dragged into an investigation because some bumpkin got fryed on a 11kv line.
And the HSE arent going to fooled for 1 second by the farmers clumsy back-tracking.

We had this same thing on another thread a couple of weeks back so I won't duplicate too much, but I remember a whole load of 70's public service films all about how dangerous farms are, and falling in machinery and slurry pits etc. Bring 'em back!
