12 V Extractor Fan problems

Hi guys!!

Just got a small problem on a domestic issue for a friend's bathroom extractor fan. On a bank holiday and all!!!

The fan hasn't worked for years apparently. It's a 12 V fan so i've checked voltage going in and out of the transformer and all's good. Also, i'm getting the required 12V at the fitting. So i guessed it might be the old fan. So i've wired in a new emcovent 12V fan and it's still not working. Any ideas what's going wrong? Could it be something to do with it being AC or DC?

imo the new fans knackered too, happens sometimes.

Check the voltage of the power supply unit when it's under load, sometimes if it's faulty you'll see 12 volts when there's no load and the voltage goes to zero as soon as there is a load.

It shouldn't be an AC/DC problem if both fans are rated the same.

agree^^^ could be a knackered tranny/psu.

Aye, I've checked that Marvo and i'm getting 12V when there is a load so i think the transformer is ok. Like i say, i'm getting the 12V at the fitting so i'm quite confused!! Might be just the fan

Give it a kick start with a screwdriver

Or a hammer but honestly check if there's anything fouling the blades like the ducting

What meter are you using ?
If it is just one of the ones that light up in a advancing scale , they sometimes lie at 12v .
Your best of with a digital multi meter .

I would, as an outside chance,check those crappy connections they make at the connector block on the fan

I know its so basic.but sometimes we forget to look for the obvious,especially if i am anything to go by

check if anything is stopping the blades, maybe try and see if it works without being in the whole.

It shouldn't be that difficult to figure out what's faulty. If it's a 12vdc fan then you can test it with a battery, if it's 12vac then any old lighting transformer will work as a test supply. If the fan still doesn't run then it's a warranty claim.

good shout simpson93 i had same problem so removed fan from hole and it worked so made hole slightly bigger and worked a treat
