Hello guys,
A customer is purchasing a range style cooker, all electric, and looking at the specs it is listed as drawing a maximum of 15.9 kw which equates to 69A. I am wondering if any of you have installed a cable for this large an appliance. I am guessing that I would have to use a 16mm cable from CU to back of oven, and would probably have to split the tails and put the oven on a seperate one way CU containing a 63a RCD 30a incomer, and class this as the isolator, as it is just around the corner in a utility room adjacent to the kitchen, and will be about 2 metres from the oven. I am also guessing that there will be no Cooker Connection Unit, and the cable will go straight from CU to oven. Like I said it is only a short 2-3 metre run from CU to back of oven. Any ideas??

Many Thanks

agree with telectrix. all theywould have done, is add up the ratings of each element. Bear in mind that each element will be thermostaically contolled, and its very rare that all will be on at once. also a cable will not come upto running temperature instantly, so very short overloads are fine. also a breaker will take 1.45x its rating before it trips, and a b tyope will take from 3-5 x its rating beofre it trips instantly.

Personally I’d go for 10mm with 45A MCB.
All I’m thinking of is Christmas day morning when you’ve got an irate customer on you doorstep with a bag of giblets he’s going stuff up your ares!

Well you all know me big is beautiful!

Zatisgoodya,

If you look at the bottom of this page you will find similar threads on this issue. Read them and you will know for next time, that cooking appliances will rarely take the manufacturers stated KW load. For example there may be 3 different elements within the oven compartment, that have been included in the appliance rating, but all cannot be utilised at the same time!! Therefore you will Never see the full stated appliance load...

At a stated 16KW, i would very much be inclined to agree with Telectrix ...and use a 6mm cable, especially as it's a very short run. And please, ....use a CCU, You know it makes sense!! lol!!
