Hello,

my my mother in law wants an outdoor light fitted to her installation. Only issue is her Consumer unit is 16th edition and has no RCD protection at all.

i don't want to do a CU change as that would mean a whole install test and the time to fit the CU

can you get RCBO for main incoming switch in the CU for a Wylex cu, 100A dp that I could just pop in place of the mccb?

I know it doesn't provide split load protection, but this would make the whole install atleast safe from a fault protection point.

thanks

Does your install methods warrant rcd protection?
If they do can you not fit a rcd in an enclosure after the Cu in line with the circuit to give protection... but tbh time to give your family personal protection by upgrading the CU ...although not required its a step I would take tbh considering the cost of fitting rcd's in an enclosure compared to the cost of a fully loaded 17th edition board.

Last but not least any addition, alteration or new circuits must meet current regulations.

Hi both, surely all outdoor kitchen or bathroom supplies need RCD now? Even still it's my in law and I know she has no earth fault protection on her socket outlets.

obviously individual RCBO's would cost a fortune

but can I get an RCCB for the Wyler panels 100a do to replace the current mccb without changing to split load.
Thanks

Which regulation do you think requires those areas to have RCD protection installed?

I assume from your statement about the lack of earth fault protection that this is a TT supply with no RCD protection and a measured Ra which does not allow the MCBs to provide fault protection?

Does the CU really have an mccb incomer? If it does then an RCCB is not a direct replacement for it! However I suspect you are just using the wrong terminology here as I've never heard of a CU having an mccb fitted.
You cannot just swap the main switch with an RCD as this does not comply with the byb

If you are planning on connecting the outside light to the existing lighting circuit, why not do as DW says? Fit an RCD FCU just below the CU. Connect the lighting circuit to that.

Cheers
Jay
