Just been reading an article in Wiring Matters can someone translate this for me as I have no idea WTF it means
"However, an exception not to provide protection is included for single dwelling units where the total economic value of the electrical installation to be protected is less than 5 times the economic value of the SPD located at the origin of the installation"

Thats how I see it, but what is the cost of a SPD ? anything from 14 quid for a single use plug in device up to 600 odd quid for a 3 phase one but what do they do for yer domestic user are they one fry and get new one, I think once again the "panels" are getting lunch from some one, ok I see the benefit in medical locations I think, but why now, remember RCD,s, plug one into the socket when using power tools out doors, then overnight it seems they had taken over the whole bloody house tripping every time a bulb popped, is this just a way of mitigating power spikes the DNO cant be arsed doing anything about

or perhaps this is the future ???

I think it is just another way of feeding manufactures.
I have only once experienced damage in a domestic from a power surge , and never from lightning.

Best we all start voicing our objections....

How many home owners are going to readily accept SPD's are actually required?

Another farce in the making...........

particulary given the cost of them. I've fitted 1 in the last few years in a domestic situation for a specific reason and even then it only happened because the customer wasn't short of a few bob.

Do some of the free online tests. Get used to using the book. After doing this I passed mine easy enough.

Hi Seems that this is an out dated question and the above would have been correct in the 17th edition. Thanks for the reply

I answered a similar question for the client, just looked at all the heaters (2KW per heater) and then asked for their half hour consumption...
