Hi, I am an apprentice electrictian of around 12 month now and someone I know has asked me to look at some lights that arn't working.

It is 2 wall lights fittings with there own pull switch each. Both switches were pulled at the same time and popped both bulbs.

What has caused this?

How would I go about finding the fault?

I just want to carry out the basic procedure to find a fault, if I can't fix it with that I will get my boss to come and take a look for him.

Cheers

It may just be bad luck, stick some new bulbs in before you carried away fault finding. I have been called out to loads of "my lights dont work" faults to find nothing more than blown bulbs. If that dont fix it then get out your meter and check for voltage to the lights at both sides of the switches to make sure that you have voltage to the switch and that the switch is working as it should.

Some bulbs cause a surge when they blow and it's not impossible that one going could take another out.......one of the most common complaints is 'my bulbs keep blowing, the wiring must be faulty'.....more often than not it's caused by rubbish bulbs.

I had the same problem with a set of ceiling lights 3 lamps in each ,did a cdu upgrade and 2 days after the lamps went looked at them they were winfilds and had been in there about 15 years replaced lamps all ok ,
