Light bulbs that are said to last for more than two decades while consuming very little energy may go on sale later this year.

US firm General Electric, Dutch company Philips and UK-based Sylvania all showcased their products at the Light Fair industry conference in Las Vegas.

BBC News - LED light bulb to last more than 20 years

Looks funky.

Surely that would be like a cure for cancer? Kept secret so companies can continue to sell drugs.

You would think it would have a warranty for twelve months and be designed to last twelve months and a day.

I'm such a cynic.....

The '20 years' is most likely more of an estimate. I can't imagine these were invented 20 years ago and they've been testing them ever since, they probably just expect them to last that long (on average).

Some of the Phillips GU10 lamps(!) come with a 2 year warranty. The benefits of LEDs are clear enough to us but I think the general public will need more convincing as it will probably be marketed as another euro conspiracy to ban our fantastic 100 watt bulbs that keep leaving burn marks on the ceiling

This is nowt new .... Me Ma & Da moved into their house in June 1951 & there was a light in the hall that lasted until 1976.

Joseph Swan excelled himself there !!

[h=1]'Light fantastic: World's oldest lightbulb still burning bright after 109 years'[/h]'bright', not that I'm calling the general accuracy of daily mail reports into question...:hand:

Lamps were always capable of lasting decades. The pre-burn was introduced to reduce lifespan and increase sales.

Agree with Guitarist, they have had the technology for years to produce extra life long lamps. Why sell only one bulb every 20 years when we can sell one bulb a year?

Yes I called them bulbs :).

Nothing wrong with that mate. A generic term which everyone understands. Whenever I tell a non-sparky that I need to change/replace a "lamp", they always assume that I mean the fitting.... :)

Has anybody been in a situation where someone genuinely thought you were going to go outside and start digging up the flowers to make the lights work?

I was never allowed to call them bulbs and it stuck with me unti the letting agent I do work for said you are getting us all confused so please dont say Changed lampholder and lamp say Changed bulbholder and bulb and I swear (but not on this forum) that when I put this on the invoice my head goes down wait for the slap on the back of it that I used to get when serving my time if I said that word instead of lamp.

And a cylinder is not a tank - that's something you drive in the army
