20yrs ago i was a spark what am i now!

i havnt been in the trade for 20yrs i was a spark(jib 15th regs approved elec industrial) what am i now!

&can i become the spark i was or should i move on(what would i need if i did )!

Hi mate, your still a sparks! and you don't really need anything to work for another firm. However I suppose a 17th edition course would be a good idea just to bring you upto speed.

well, we have drills you don't have to plug in. meters without moving coils, meggers you don't have to wind up.

seriously, mate. it's all qualifications now, 17th ( have to redo next year, because they're amending it ), 2391, 2330, cards for get on site, certificates to use a lift, stepladders banned on a lot of sites, and as for domestic, the notorious part pee, whereby ex traffic counters and dog wardens think they know more than us.

basically do i need part p,jib/eic card etc ,to do domestic/commercial/industrial!

You only need Part P to do domestic

You don't need a JIB card..... although allot of companies ask for it

I can't remember where we're at with the whole NVQ thing!!!!

If you were a qualified sparks 20 years ago with a JIB Card and you have your certs then you can get another JIb card you just have to jump through one small hoop to get it and thats pass a 'Saf£ty t£st' costing you a few quid.
17th would definately make you more employable I think though if you are coming back to the trade.

Most of the industrial work is largely the same however, where you would of installed a high quality trunking system, you may now be installing a low quality basket system.

If you've a 236 (all parts) then just the 17th would get you back on site..... Well maybe not a building site, as you would need a JIB card...

i've packed in doing site work as it's total pants these days.
too much idiotic H&S. have to keep hard hat on in the karzi in case a bog roll hits you on the head, radios are banned from a lot of sites, you are expected to park your van up to a mile from where you are working, if you come away at the end of the day with more than half your tools, it's a bonus.

maintenance electrician on a factory with good management support is, IMO, the way forward.

If you have 236 1 & 2 then get yourself on the regs course and you'll be ok.

fire alarms,intruder alarms cctv,your skills would be put to good use,worth looking into and pays more than sparks these days,security companies love sparks as they are easy to train up.

if you have your 1 and 2 then just get the 17th mate. if you want to catch up on what you missed out on i have a 16th you can buy

as for the nvq if you did want to do it it`s the 2356 at the moment but you will need to get signed onto that one fairly quick as they are going to the new one which you will have to do an am2 test along with the am2
