Hi anyone else having trouble with city and guilds 2357 portfolio due to working alone finding it really difficult complete any advice would be great......

what kind of things are you struggling on?

make sure to take plenty of pics as evidence and ask painters/anyone around to take one say its for your logbook.

then you have to do writeups later.

did you get a check list of what you need to do? if not have you met your training guy yet? if yes ask for one when you next see him

I think he means that he doesn't get thee type of work required, in order for him to complete his portfolio. It's the old catch 22 scenario, and why there are so many bent NVQ 3's out there!!

to be honest i can understand why they have the range in the nvq but unless people work for a large firm or get sub contracted out to others then ita unlikely they will be able to cover it.

Basically to prove as far as they can these days, that the electrician has an all round capability. Which in the past was once reasonably taken for granted for most Indentured apprentices...

Otherwise you are leaving the electrical industry wide open to those that will take advantage and make the most out of deskilling the industry. Which for the electrician normally means lower rates of pay across the board!!

true but would you expect the average electrician make off and hand polish fibre cables etc.

it would be better if there was a bigger range of the different equipement needed, i have done things that are not in there and are harder than some imho

I think, (but i'm not exactly up on all the requirements of the NVQ 3) that there are compulsory and non compulsory elements on the portfolio checklist, depending on what NVQ you are doing. I can't imagine making off and polishing a fibre optic cable as being compulsory for a typical installation electrician, but maybe for an electrician working within that field of the industry.

As i say i don't know, but maybe others here will??

Thanks for help/advice spoke to tutor today and he explained it and is no way near as involved as I first thought just going to take a while to get jobs/evidence needed

none are compulsory, you have a list of say 10 different cables and need to do at least 7 of them.

How about sharing this information given to you by the tutor, it may help others here??
the nvq itself isn't as complicated as people think.

you need to do write ups on three jobs; risk assessment, method statement etc.

not terribly difficult then there is bassicallt a tick list to fill in.

a certain amount of this sheet needs to be witnessed but some can be described in writing or discussed on how you did it, with signitures from mentor to countersign to say it is your work etc.

if you ask your tutor they could show you some of there previous students am2 paperwork, this will help it sink in that it isnt as bad as you think
