hi all would like to know if their is a lot of diffrence in the 2391-10 to the 2391-20 does it focus more on the calculations of the installations or is it a more detailed 2391-10 any input greatly appreceiated also is it worth sitting?

In a way, its both of your descriptions - more calculation orientated, but is also looks in more detail at the same theory that underpins the 2391-10. Its title gives it away - Design, Erection & Verification.

It is very much worth sitting if you like to push your boundaries, and improve your understanding, but if you struggled with the theory of the regular 2391, don`t attempt this qualification (a pass in that is a pre-requesite anyway)

However, it does involve quite a lot of work - more so than the Inspection & Testing, and the projects are realistically gonna take many multiples of 10`s of hours to do usefully.
I`d certainly recommend it if you want to be able to `properly` design your own installations, rather than following suit

i didnt struggle with the calculations i just found that trying to obtain the correct information difficult in order to carry out the calculations properley the pre worked examples that we were givin at the course for the 2391-10 were pretty simple but it all depends on the day how to identify the questions properties as they at times were misleading in the context of certain questions but i am intrested in doing the 2391-20 i just wanted to get some feedback from others who have sat this course as various websites are diffrent on their discriptions of said course many thanks for replying also struggling to find anywhere that gives any 2391-20 past papers so as to give a better understanding i have noticed that some websites refer to building a project any info on that would be great

Not strictly true.

Whilst some providers may stipulate that 2391-10 is a pre-requisite that is their requirement rather than City & Guilds'.

That said, the Practical Application of the Inspection, Testing & Certification of Electrical Installations component is common to the two qualifications, and as such if you did not already possess it from 2391-10 then you would be required to take it for 2391-20.

Quite correct. It isn`t a stated pre-requesite of C&G. However, ASFAIK most colleges demand a previous pass in the 2391-10, but i should have made the distinction perhaps. Also, as you acknowledge, you`ll need to pass the practical on one or other.

Bobby, I suspect just about everyone whose sat a 2391-10 would relate to the first line of your reply

As to the project, its basically a scale plan of a building - could be a sports centre, could be a light industrial/retail combo with flats above etc (they try to throw various forms of installation types in the mix) and you`ve essentially got to design the electrical installation(s) for it. As you have to supply all calculations used thruout, it can be surprisingly time-consuming, but a very useful exercise - if you enjoy the maths that is (hence my mention of them)
Oh, and you`ll need lots of coloured pens :)

The exam has a small number of scenario based questions, wildly varying, which demand a pretty comprehensive working knowledge of BS7671, GN3, Building Regs and of course, design calcs. Its open book, but realistically you haven`t time to check more than a few obscure points. You need to have 90% or more locked in your head already. The `questions` are quite often better described as `tasks` - such as putting down on paper the regulations & procedures pertaining to the Inspection & Testing of a caravan park. This approach demands you have a good understanding of I & E, as well as an awareness of the peculiarities of Special Locations

Typically the 2391-20 courses are subscribed to by small numbers of the more capable & experienced sparks, and the discussions that form part of a well run course can be amongst the most informative you`ll come across.

Best of luck if you do go for it - sure you`ll enjoy it

Correct it is not a pre-requisite but if you don't have it course providers will not let you take the course as the way they have their course structured they do not do the Inspection and Testing part of 2391-20 as with having 2391-10 you have already passed that part.

I happen to have a copy of the June 2010 2391-20 exam paper..ssshhh..;) and have to say it's very verification biased. There are only 2 questions on actual design itself, the rest is all about earth fault loops and testing. There are no less than 7 diagrams to do, all testing related. I was quite surprised as when I did it it was all design and design calculation based with only a small part on verification.

IMO if you intend working for yourself then it's worth it as you can design your own jobs properly, if you stay employed then chances are it'll be their way of doing things, so it'll be less beneficial.

Is this then a pre requisite for me to come into the domestic market personally or something I should have as I am raising a schenme oir inspection and testing in my company that conforms to BS7671.
