Hi Guys, doing my 2391 Practical in a couple of weeks and my 2330 practical in a other month. Can anybody give me a heads up on this. I am currently doing the course but we have not spent any time on the exam test rigs yet.

Have seen the board we are going to be working on and there is a additional Circuit ( CU Garage with light and socket coming off). What methods would you use for testing this and what test would you do. I have a few ideas cpc r1 and r2 at light and socket would you link the additional CU busbars or the main CU busbars.
Insulation resistance would be done from main CU.
ZE & PFC from main CU.
ZS from the (garage) light and socket.

Also there will be faults put on the circuit what faults am I likely to be getting? Got few ideas

Any help greatly appreciated thanks Craig

Re 2330 practical
You need to identify about 4 'visual' faults, eg loose bonding connections, absence of stickers, holes in enclosures.

The 'testing' faults they give you will give you a clue as to where to look, eg

FAULT: Customer has recently had an outdoor socket installed by a neighbour but is getting shocks from it.
SOLUTION: check for presence of earthing at the outdoor socket (R1+R2) and IR.

FAULT: Lighting circuit often trips
SOLUTION: Check R1+R2 on both strappers, and IR on both strappers.

FAULT: Certain appliances don't work.
SOLUTION: Check polarity on ring final (start with R1+R2)

For the fluorescent light use the crocodile clips they give you to connect the line and neutral together in the CU and test to CPC (type 2 test) and note on the test sheet.

If you PM me your email address i can email you the 'cheat sheet' I made up and learned before the exam (obviously you can't take it into the exam with you).

on the 2330 you will also get some visual fualts they are so easy to spot you may find a small crack in a fitting dont be misjudged its definitly a visual fualt

we had 6 visuals on our`s, supposedly I found 14 including the main earth not being connected which they did not know about. like previously said they are well easy to spot. on your ir tests it will be a dead short not just a few m ohms. would not stress to much over the practical it`s a walk in the park

Hi brav,
yes, sorry my inbox is probably full of spam.
Unfortunately I don't think I've got the 'cheat sheet' any more since my old hard drive stopped working, but I'll see if I printed one out and filed it away in my notes.

The 2391 doesnt have any faults on the exam rig. Do all the tests in the correct sequence, think about things, and look at what light switch does what. I am fairly fair with the practical, i live in the real world, and will allow minor mistakes as long as they are redone correctly, and to be fair the mistakes i see are just down to nerves. I would say that the majority of experienced testers i see are no better or no worse than me, but i am looking over their shoulders for an hour or 2. But whatever you do or dont do, you MUST CARRY OUT SAFE ISOLATION AND LOCK OFF or its game over there and then.

There is a visual test on 17th edition non conformances, a Insulation Fault finding test, and a Zs test on a couple of protective devices such as 60898 BS1362.

The practical you should not worry about, do it safely and you will be OK, take your time, there is plenty. The written is the big hurdle on this one.

Good luck,

Howard
