Hi I have recently qualified as an electrician through completing my apprenticship. I was looking into doing my 2391 course as I have been informed this allowes you to test and certificate other people's work not just my own. Is this correct ?

i have also noticed that this course has changed to the 2394 and 2395 are these the same qualification?
woukd it benefit me to take these ? And finally what does these courses allow me to do that I can't all ready do many thanks Tony

I can only really tell you about the 2391 as that Is what I took, And it basically gives you a more in depth look at why we test as well as a better understanding of testing itself and the associated paperwork. I assume it's replacements hold just as much as sway with potential employers. Any inspection and testing qual is a big plus if you can get it.

They have basically split the 2391 into two parts. The 2394 is concerned with initial verification whereas the 2395 focuses on periodic inspection. They are both looked favorably upon by employers, however it is a myth that you require either to sign off your own work, you need to be competent to do so and these qualifications are a way of proving that

I wouldn't say it 'allows' you to carry out anything you can't already - if you work for a company and they need an EICR done, they're unlikely to tell you you can't do it because you haven't got the right certificate. The only thing really is it means you can get a gold ECS card (people are always impressed by 'gold level' anything - just look at my avatar) and you can be an NICEIC qualified supervisor for your company, if you so wish.

I did the 2391 just before they changed the course numbers, for that reason. I was doing a lot of agency work at the time and employers sometimes asked for the 2391 - I wanted to be able to say yes I had it instead of being accused of reeling off numbers. Since then I would like to think employers have got used to the new numbers.

Since then it's difficult to say how many jobs I've got because I had the 2391, but I've never been asked to carry out an EICR or bang in an earth rod.

So should you do it? Why not? If you've got the opportunity now then go for it. Nobody can take it away from you, you're not going to be at a disadvantage if you're got it, and it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

It will mean you can get approved status under the JIB. This is providing you already have a gold card or have the relevant qualifications to get one. You can still get a gold card without the 2394/5 or older 2391.

Hi,putting all the scheme upgrades and kudos aside,i would say an excellent reason for choosing to do these qualifications, was to improve understanding of the testing process, and have that verified,by way of an exam (see what i did:prrr:)

My take on quals,is that they are proof of little. On a day,a limited set of facts or duties, were done,to a standard...That is the most an outsider could deduce.

In the same way, that a vehicles MOT is part of its' providence, but by no means all.

This said,i have put myself through many exams and assessments, some a pleasure, some a chore, and i consider them all worthwhile, and worthy of no small amount of pride. That includes, the 2391 mentioned.

The reason i did that particular one,was i had been assisting quite a few spark pals, from being quite young,in the field of testing. They called me up,when things went round in circles or the normal set of investigating methods, had failed. I was determined, and never, let an issue beat me,usually being labelled "lucky" or "That was where we going to look next..."

...anywho...it was these eejit errant tradesmen, who suggested going for the 2391,if only to "erase yer cockyness..." I nailed theory and practical, first hit :sunny:

So yes,i would certainly do them, revise hard, know your subject, pass, and move on.

Do not ever believe, that possession of such certificates,is a guarantee of craftsmanship. That,is a daily chore,of being diligent, going the extra mile,NOT taking the easy route, even if many others around you seem to have settled thus...

Finally,always remember,Harold Shipman,had a current,genuine,bone-fide medical certificate,up on that surgery wall...so,therefore...:lipsrsealed2:
