I am about to go on my 2391 course what is the best book for helping my study and revision

I used "City and Guilds exam success 2391 Inspection and Testing" By Jonathan Elliott. Good book, 2 full exam papers with a complete walkthrough on answers and what the examiner is looking for.

Good luck with the course

I had all sorts of books, but sold them on ebay because they all said the same thing.
What I did find handy though was the Amicus pocket books.

The test & inspection one is based on GN3 and is well illustrated and easy to digest.
I also founds its method for calculating overall insulation resistance much easier than the method I was shown on the course.

2391 Exam Success and GN 3. Also had the BRB which was cross referenced from GN3, handy but not essential as it does tie the 2391 information back to the regs.

Top tip, learn to draw your distribution circuits from the transformer to the property and label correctly. Almost guarenteed to get at least one and its a 15 point question.........

do you mean the return earth fault loop paths ?

concerning the distributor's equipment to consumers equipment

The last section of the test is the long answers and are all based round a senario and my be commercial or residential, earthing arrangement is in this text, so read it carefully. I was asked to draw " a clearly labeled diagram showing the earth fault loop path for circuit 9". Therefore you have to draw the supply circuit with asked for earthing, main fuse, meters etc, and ensure the circuit is labled as being terminated at the respective "Circuit 9" terminals in the CU................

so you had to label it as being tt tn-s or tn-c-s etc then main cut out fuse r1,r2 etc

then cct9 was the eath fault point ?

The one I had to draw was a 3 phase TN C S, therefore had to show all 3 phases from the transformer, the seperation of earth from the neutral. circuit 9 was single phase supply to a water boiler on a dedicated radial, so all of this was shown pictorially. Not only did I have to number the 'way' the boiler came from, but also made sure it had its correct 'line' too.

As long as you are happy drawing the different earthing arrangements, all you then do is add the chosen circiut and indicate the correct fault (usuallu an earth loop diagram). Even if asked to draw a single phase, still show all 3 phases on the transformer and label them whether connected/tapped or not (dont forget the earth on the transformer).

well thats the two and a half hours of the exam used up already
I was all done in 1hr 40mins, then spent the next 20mins going throught from start to finish looking for stupid mistakes and any missed questions.

Dont dwell on a question, either answer it or move on. Chances are that a later question will answer it or atleast jog your memory. You get tons of paper in the answer book, so just leave plenty of space to write an answer in later. The test is a points race..........get all the easy info out first, then look at the harder/thinking questions last. Initiall spent 1 hour on part 1 (short answers), then move to part two (long answers). Anything left after pt 2, then go back to pt1.

As long as you clearly number your answers, the examiner is there to find it, so dont worry too much about order (1, 2, 3, 4 etc), its nice, but not essential.
