Hi every one,

The company are putting me in for my 2391 and i know it's hard, but until i start the course can any one give me any tips what to be looking at? I have been glancing through the 17th that i did last year and getting some hints to look at the more harder equations ie Adiobatic and others for loop testing.

Any ideas welcome i have my own 17th edition and almost as much paper work on the exam but where do i begin befor the course starts?????

Thanks Ian. :icon7:

Brush up on your insulation resistance calcs.
Buy Guidance note 3
Use correct terminology word for word
Make sure all written answers are clear
You can find loads of practice questions on the web but some might be in 16th edition terminology so be careful
oh and don't let class mates bog you down with retarded questions that they should know (that was a problem for me)
Good luck mate

I agree with KamKam get yourself Guidance note 3 and this is your bible for the theory exam. I recently did the 2391 and i'm awaiting results of 2391 theory, passed Practical which wasn't too difficult but have had experience with 3 phase before the course so that helped. If you haven't had any experience with 3 phase don't worry as will be explained by your tutor, as said you need Guidance note 3 for this course and don't forget theory exam is 2 and half hours closed book, so plenty of revision required.

Hi all,

thanks for the info i am working with 3phase and single phase my experience with 3 phase is limited but can get by in the position that i am working in.
I have BS7671 17th PAT testing and Part p City & guilds but a long time ago i took 236 Part 1 with NVQ in 1990 so this is the biggest exam for me so far..

Very best of luck spikester hope you have passed mate,

Thanks Ian.

Many thanks,
for the info on ebay i have already got one disc with a lot of information on it, and yes it is enjoyable to watch some thing and get Q & A. i have found the disc very helpful.
My Supervisor who has been through the exam has sugested that i read up on the large book given to me when i did my 17th last year and that has been helpful. Refreshing my self with the 2008 edition showing equations with answers.

Many thanks and i will carry on refreshing my memory and taking in the new.:)

get your head in the books, do past papers, ask questions - i learnt more on this site than all of the books combined, take the guidance notes 3 with you everywhere and memorize it from front to back

oh and prepare yourself for nine weeks of hell! lol

and read GN3 like its the best novel you ever read lol front to back and back to front you be ok mate

practice how to write out test procedures in bullet points

with and without drawings and calcs included as they can ask for either eg for ring final circuit conductors with the 3 steps and all calcs like the exam success book lenny recommended its got two sample tests and shows how they want it answered
GN3 and OSG have all test procedures with drawings but your tutor will show you how to simplify the info from them but keeping the important info C&G will want in the answer
learn how to draw earth fault loop diagrams they will show you on course and fully labelled with correct terminology of all points that the fault would pass through
eg for TN-C-S path of earth fault loop

1.point of fault (at the exposed conductive part) eg cooker / washer etc etc
2.circuit protective conductor R2
3. M.E.T ( main earthing terminal)
4 Earthing conductor
5. PEN conductor ( combined neutral/ protective conductor)
6. star point
7. secondary winding
8. supply line conductor
9. supply overcurrent protective device (eg DNOs main cut out fuse )
10. consumer overcurrent protective device (eg BSEN 60898)
11. R1 Line conductor
12 point of fault

if you pm me with email address i will send you the drawings of each

I have to warn you that they were rushed during a lesson and my drawing and hand writing has always been shocking lol but you will get the idea and all have correct terminology
as you can see 12 if asked to list all the points of the earth fault loop
for the drawings i send you each will have about 15 items listed or more so if you have the 12 above and the others then you have to get top marks for it
this is all we did in the first lesson as well as covering exposed and extraneous conductive parts

part 6 and 7 of the regs
GS38 eg about test equipment 4mm probes but preferably 2mm, fused test leads ,finger barriers
memorandum of guidance on electricity at work regulations 1989
IP codes
especially IP 4x protection against solid objects greater than 1mm and 1mm wires horizontal top surface eg op of ccu or socket outlet / enclosure etc and IP2x front or sides of enclosure
sample papers as they and the exam success give you a feel for the exam
mate lots to learn but as your starting now at least your giving yourself a better chance

they will teach you most of it on the course but not everything you will need to know and learn somethings yourself they just presume you should know when going for this exam
Good Luck

Many thanks for all the info from you all and i have been looking through as much paper work as i can even at work. My Supervisor gave me a pass rate for 2008 and it's roughly 50ish % in August the sun must have been out in to the 60's pass rate.

This is what i want and it's going to be hell but it will be worth it especialy the potential between the lines.

Have had a good look at a cd i bought a while ago and just watching the videos is some thing, just been reading up on 6.11 then onto 511 i think i might just stay at work for an extra hour for the peace and quiet when the course runs.

Sparks i will send you my e-mail address now while i am on here thanks for that and look forward to the reply.

Thanks to all who have responded and i would look forward to any more info Thanks Ian.

Hi Ian,
Search the web for past exam papers and read GN3 every day till your exam!! I did the exam in Dec 2010 and failed-my course tutor suggested we did at least 1 hour a day revision (which I didn't do). I did the exam again in June 2011 and revised my arse off and passed. Concentrate on the correct terminology and learn the tests off by heart as you often get asked to explain some of these in detail. I made up flash cards with specific info on them, taken from GN3 and took these to work and looked at them during my breaks-sounds boring but it helped me. You must put the revision in otherwise you will find the exam difficult like I did first time. Good luck

Hi Jaman,
Thanks for the post i take the 17th and GN3 with me to work and look at it when possible. Makes interesting reading if nothing else, we have some down time as the week goes on where as being on Maitanence it can be busy now we are looking at moving factory very soon.

I have heard that most of the exam is based on the Reg's and what you know about the subject in your own mind.

Congrats on passing your exam and wondering how long it took for the results to come through?

Many thanks Ian.

Hi Ian,
I took the exam on the 9th June and was told to expect the results in 6-8 weeks. I finally got the results at the end of August after phoning the college on numerous occasions. I was a nervous wreck until the results finally came through!! A book I would thoroughly recommend is:The Part P Doctor by Alan Lynch-excellent book on testing and expecting and in laymans terms-hope this helps and best of luck!!
Jason
