i have been working in the trade for over 10 years but my testing knowledge is pretty rubbish. im considering doing the 2391 course as a challenge to myself but ive heard it is mega hard and the failure rate is very high. Can anyone that has sat the course give me a heads up? thanks

It does have a high failure rate mainly due to the fact that most of us electricians hate paper, we much prefer smashing things to bits and working on the tools.

It's like everything really the more you work at it the better you do at it. There is the 2392, but for me I would plump for the 2391 and work at it.

Read and get to know the Regs and the GN 3.

There is this exam book guide by the C&G it's excellent

City and Guilds Exam Success: Inspection and Testing IEE Wiring Regulations: Amazon.co.uk: Jonathan Elliott, Mark Coles: Books

For testing itself there is this

Practical Guide to Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations: Conforms to 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations BS 7671:2008 and Part P of Building Regulations: Amazon.co.uk: Christopher Kitcher: Books

This website does revision questions

DJT Electrical Engineering Consultancy, Electrical Contractors, Electrician Training & Resources, Wirral & Merseyside

As for the actual testing do your home, your neighbours, family and friends. Get use to filling out the certificates and using the right terminology. Get use to using test equipment and how it works.

Finally it will be down to money v time. If it's money then a 12 week night course is the way to go. If it's time I think these 4 day intense course are a bit much. A lot of C&G centres do a 4 week 1 day a week course which I think is best.

What ever you decide all the best

The jump up from the basic sparks course to the 2391 does catch a lot of guys out. Those who have just become sparks with their comfortable 45-50% pass rate and able to take in their marked up regs book get a shock when they need to do it all from memory and pass percentages in the 70%.

But hey if it was easy everyone would be doing it.

Before 2392 became "mainstream," this was sadly quite a common situation - definately a leap between the content and expectation of 2382-10/20 to 2391-10.

Bright Sparks has given some excellent advice above, especially with the links to the formal C&G literaure. Many guys sit with endless "past-papers," trying to remember, parrot-fashion, the content and hoping that the same questions come up. Full, dedicated study and the gaining of an understanding of I&T is definately the way to go about it.

Do look at the C&G 2392 content also, as was mentioned.
