The 2394 course is intended to cover the initial verification of an installation and the inspection and testing required for the Electrical installation certificate.
The 2395 course is intended to cover the periodic inspection of existing installations and the Electrical installation condition report.
From my point of view (which is not supported by C&G) the 2394 is equivalent to the old 2392 and the 2395 is equivalent to the old 2391. This is a simplistic view since they are presented in different ways but I feel it is a useful comparison.
If you do not have a lot of experience in testing and you are unsure if you will be able to successfully complete the 2395 then first completing the 2394 may help you to gain some additional knowledge.
However there is no
requirement for you to have completed the 2394 for you to sign off an initial verification. You must be competent to do this, and the information gained from the 2395 will provide enough information to understand initial verification so long as you realise that limitations are not permitted on initial verification.
Review the information on the
C&G website about the 2395 and see if you feel confident with what they are asking you to achieve; if you are, then go for the 2395, if not then find out about the 2394 but be prepared to take the 2395 later (at more cost!)
City and guilds state that the 2395: is aimed at practising electricians who have not carried out inspection and testing since qualifying or who require some update of training before going onto other City & Guilds qualifications. The qualification is also suitable for those with limited experience of periodic inspection of electrical installations, such as those entering the industry from other engineering disciplines or who have been working in allied trades.
