Starting my 2396 design course first week in November I have the 17th edition on site guide gn3 and a Brian scad don design book are there any one out there whove done the exam and what other books would help me through it thanks in advance

i did this exam in june and to be honest, whilst it's a very comprehensive book, the iee installation design guide is a bit more in-depth than is needed for this exam. the formulae that you'll need will be covered on the course. it's all about design current, volt drop, adiabatic equation etc. all pretty basic stuff. in the exam itself, you're allowed to take in a copy of the reg's, osg and gn3. the only book i referenced was the reg's, the other two never got used. by all means get the iee book, it covers everything you'll need to know, just don't let it scare you. good luck. p.s. the 3 hours will fly by, but you'll be jiggered by the end. i recommend having a bite to eat before you sit the exam - to give you a bit of energy.

i used the OSG in the 2391-20 exam for the cable calcs, as it has the grouping tables ect, all in one place and easy to find without flicking all the way through.
good point. i actually wrote every formula down in the back of my reg's book. not sure if it's allowed, but the woman babysitting us never took her nose out of her book, so it didn't really matter.

I also completed my exam this year and although i had all allowed books with me the only one I used was the regs. Frankly I found the assignment more gruelling than the exam. I will say scaddans book and the electricians design guide were very helpful for the assignment
