Is there a maximum time that a 2D lamp can be used for? As a customer who i maintain the communal stairwells in some flats for has been told by a so called electrical engineer that 2D lamps are only meant to be used for up to 3 hours at a time. Have tried to find out via manufacturers info but no luck so far. This really seems crazy to me.

Hi Soul, This is based on an old internet fuelled scare story, back in the day when 2D technology had low frequency control gear that had high thermal losses, they got hot when they were run for extended periods. The major manufacturers (Osram, Thorn, GE e.c.t.) all stated at the time that their units were rated for continual use and that they believed the issue, if it existed, was confined to unbranded imports from the far east.
Modern 2D light fittings use high frequency control gear with low losses and are continually rated, so this is definitely no longer an issue.

Hmmm. I fitted some Robus IP65 28W 2D HF luminaires a few weeks ago... I got them from a nearby City's as they were for a call-out job. The blurb said they weren't designed for continuous use. I think it did mention a time like 3 hours.
So how the ? do you safeguard against someone forgetting to turn the light off? Crazy isn't it?

Simon.
