Is this figure in the right ball park I have not been keeping up on prices recently

Before I could give you an answer I would ask why only a 2 Kpw system. Is it because:

a) your father in law can only fit 8 panels on his roof
or
b) because £3870 is what he wants to spend on panels.

If its a) then it might be an idea to get a quote for more powerful panels....LG do a great 300 watt panel for example.

Rule of thumb is fit the most powerful system you can given the space allowed.
