i was asked this question in an interview for a job today, is this actually in the regs which colour of a three phase cable ypu should you use as neutral (nothing was mentioned about sleeving m8 they just wanted to know which colour core you would use)...

thanks

While it is common practise to put blue sleeving on the grey to denote the neutral there is no real need to do this as grey is the accepted colour for neutral in a 3 core cable;)

Always use black for earth myself as do most sparks nowadays. You must forget black was ever neutral and stick to grey instead, this leaves the black as the only viable option for the earth. Don't forget to sleeve/tape it at both ends!

A competent electrician should give not a **** what colour is sleeved what
He has the capability to find what is what regardless :)

So many colours for so many years with so many changes, who cares anymore
The next time I use an old bit of red white and blue for a 3 phase supply
I could colour the red brown
the white grey,or is that black
then the blue black or grey even

but if i was jointing it to a red yellow and blue before it connects to a brown black and grey ;)

Its not really that important guys, uniformity is fantasy land still far away

[ElectriciansForums.net] 3 core colours ?
'DE-NEUTRALISING' BLACK

Under the new legislation colours for fixed wiring introduced by Amendment 2 to BS7671, black is now used to identify a phase conductor, not a neutral conductor, in new installation work.
for all single-phase applications, it is required use cables marked for such use, that is with brown, blue and green-yellow cores.
Breaking the black/neutral association
Where three-core cables, marked in the new three-phase colours are used for single-phase applications, it is proposed that, as a convention, the black core is used for the protective conductor, the brown for the phase conductor and the grey for neutral. This convention is intended to break the association between black and neutral. It would mean that the black core would normally be over-marked green-yellow, and the grey core over-marked blue or N. The brown core would not need additional marking.

someone issued this at the time cant remember who
jib/nic/eca?

No you wont find it in our VAGUE regs:D

Sorry what i should have said is the grey is acepted as neutral among sparks;)most sparks i know use the grey for N some sleeve it blue others dont bother,at the end of the day if a grey wire goes into a terminal marked N and has a blue coming out the other side it doesnt take much working out does it,and to be honest anyone who cant fathem out which wire is N then they have no business messing:D

I blame europe.Everything is changing to suit them on the continent,we'll be driving on the right if they had their way.
