here's one for all you time served electricians out there.......we have a client who has a three phase immersion heater installed in to a bulk tank 1000 litres! that has never been wired up, as he only has a single phase supply, he want us to fit an immerSUN to dump the excess power from his 4kw pv system in to the bulk tank, my question is can it be done?
Oh yeah Did you not see my three phase system using 3 ImmerSUN's and 4 x 4.5 kW immersions? (2500 Ltr tank though)
The problem you'll have is that they usually share a common neutral, though you can sometimes remove the bridge that connects them, - sharing the common neutral is OK on three phase, but may not be if you are going to wire them up in single phase, as you'll increase the current (depending upon your cable size / the thickness of the bridge)
What rating is the immersion? If like ours it was 4.5kW, you can use two of the elements in parallel to give you 3KW - just remember above re the cable size you'd need for the neutral then. (though it is only 3kW, so not really an issue)
The three pahse immersions that we installed actually came with wiring instructions for single and three phase so either 3 x 1.5KW or 1.5kW/3kW/4.5kW.
That's just what we thought, link across the phases just as the neutrals are already, at 230v 2.6kw comes up at around 11A
just getting a bit frazzled in the sun and needed a second opinion and more ice cream!!!
