Hi Guys,

I recently looked at a job in pub where there is a 3 phase TN-S incoming supply but only 1 phase is being utilised on a single phase meter, now the client wants to install a 3 phase oven do i need to contact DNO or can the meter be changed without getting them involved?

Isn't the meter the DNOs property? they'd have to change it to a 3 phase one surely for him to use the full 3 phase supply.

So your fully prepared to disconnect a sealed DNO meter and replace with your own 3 phase meter, ...and in the process liven up two phases of a 3 phase sealed DNO service head cut-out, with your own BS88 fuses!! Are you actually being serious here??

Exactly how long have you been working as an electrician??

Ok thanks for your responses,

It was a stupid post i hadn't really thought about it properly but surely some of the responses were a bit unnecessary isn't that what this forum is for to help people

Well, its a bit like this:
Yep sometimes people post without thinking through, this forum will straighten you out, turn your skin sensitivity to minimum....
However you have alluded to touching something which quite frankly has some scary implications. I am just trying to imagine, EON coming out to read the meter after you have changed it and then trying to figure out what to bill the client.
Anyway there is a lot more to just changing the meter as has been suggested, even assuming the service head is active on all 3 phases, you will need an isolation point so you can design and build a new distribution board for your oven or some other fused isolater device for it.
So, in simple terms - DNO to fit new meter, you /and or DNO to fit TP isolater, then you need to design a solution to supply the existing services and the new oven.

Perhaps i should of elaborated in my original post, i will be installing a 3 phase board with a means of isolation point and all the existing services and new oven will be supplied from the 3 phase board, with the correct size 3 phase mcbs.

I wasn't just planning on wiring straight from the meter with no means of protection and apologise if i gave that impression

I had a client who wanted exactely the same thing - for me the DNO engineer would not fit a means of isolation for some reason better known to them and insisted that I was there at the same time to connect into the new 3 phase board while he looked on, and then he replaced the cut outs and put seals on them - unfortuneately he didn't show on the first agreed date, wasting my time and thus costing the clent more.
