I am looking for some advice regarding installing a supply for a 4hp three phase band saw.

I do 99% domestic/office single phase installations however I have been asked by a client as part of a job to do the above.

The saw will run off a 3 phase socket. I am planning to run the supply from an existing 3 phase isolator box which no longer has a machine supplied from it. The isolator box is located some 5 metres from the required socket point. There is no requirement to have any single phase supply associated with the saw.

My main questions are:

As there is no requirement for single phase am I correct in assuming that no neutral is required?

As far as wiring the socket is concerned what considerations do I need to take into account regarding where the L1,L2,L3 conductors are terminated in the socket?. I have not wired a 3 phase socket before

Any other main points I need to consider?

You may say "get a industrial electrician to do this" however I hold city and guilds 2330 level 3 and part P(17th), but just lack the practical knowledge on this.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

1. Depends on the saw there may be some controls that require a neutral, the saw spec will tell you that.

2. A red CEE socket will be 5 pronged and the phases/neutral/earth are all clearly marked on them

If it's a shop bought piece of equipment then it will be supplied with an emergency stop. Make sure itas one.

If for some reason the saw runs backwards then just reverse 2 phases. I normally do that in the plug.

The conection from the isoaltor box to the motor will you be running that in flexible conduit?

Without seeing the actual job it's hard to advise but if you have any other worries just shout

just as an aside, but relevant. came across a useful idea i've not seen before. we wired up a roller shutter door for a regular client the other week. the door came with a 3ph. 5 pin plug attached. the reason for this was that the door installer is not a qualified electrician, so whnilst not being able ( legally ) to hard wire the doors, he's OK to plug in to a socket. Now the interesting bit is. 2 adjacent pins on the plug are reversible, so if phase rotation is incorrect, it';s a 2 minute job to twist them round, saves switching cables. good idea. but first time i.ve seen it

Many thanks Malcolm for your reply to my query and the information is very useful. I will kinow the spec for the saw in the next couple of days from the customer. Regarding the supply from the existing isolator to the new 3 phase socket, I was planning to use rigid PVC conduit attached to the factory brick wall, or steel wire armoured cable attached to the wall. I appreciate your help with this and I am sure I will have some more questions once I know the spec of the saw.

Many thanks

Thanks telectrix for your comments on 3 phase socket/plug. That's a useful bit of information and I will look out for that facility. Many thanks.

I really can't see a problem with it assuming there is a neutral there.
