Where does it say we need to keep the array 300mm away from the edge of the roof? I have seen some that are much closer than that.
 
Its the approximate distance away from the edge where the wind loading on the array significantly drops away. So for those not doing the wind calc this is deemed a safer distance. As you get closer or overhang, building control may get involved.
 
Do you know if there is an additional wind calc to go through beyond the BRE 489 if you propose to go beyond the 300mm limit. I'm looking at trying to fit an array onto a roof and the 300mm at the top may be reduced to 150mm to facilitate the spec the customer has requested.
 
I think you can rely on wind load calculations made in software tools available from some suppliers of mounting structure (e.g. German Mounting Systems). These software tools incorporate the relevant standards and norms and calculate the wind loads based on the information you give for the actual layout.
