Hello Everybody...

Just seeing if anyone has ever had the pleasure of carrying out the following.

Have existing fan in place with 4" core hole, but need to increase to 6" as existing fan is inadequate for size/type of room.

Unfortunately this isn't your standard 'easy-peasy' block wall, but 100 year old brick wall in the basement of a 4 storey house approx 500mm thick. The old bricks round here can be challenging at the best of times!

Did suggest a centrifugal fan, but they dont want anything to bulky.

Any thoughts suggestions would be greatly appreciated (FYI - unable to core new hole has to be same location.)

Thanks Sy

is it possible to fit a 4" and a 6" core bit at the same time? then the 4" would guide the 6".

OK, you can't use a pilot to centre a core drill, but how about temporarily fixing some wood to the wall to position the core drill?

Edit: Either a board with a 6" hole or just three or four pieces of batten.

Great thank you, think a combination of these 2 should do it

Sy

4 bits of batten screwed to make a 6" frame around where you need to go in order to stop the core jumping around when you present it. Once it's dug in you're home and dry.

You could cut a 100mm hole in an old brick wall and use the plug in the hole with some fixings set about an inch or so in , that would get the hole started after that the plug could be removed then carry on ..

I have seen a 6" core in use with a 4" pilot core for exactly this job. Never seen the kit for sale anywhere though!

I'd still be tempted to go for a centrifugal 4" fan, but one that can be recess mounted perhaps? Something like a Nuaire Genie doesn't look too bad with most of it sunk into the wall.

You can adapt a 4" core bit to use as a guide centre to the 6" but once your 10mm in using methods listed above, all is well....but i can give you a great tip i have used in differing circumstances to good effect in the past. Set up your laser level or similar (surely we all have one these days...) so it's dot marks the centre of your hole. Marker pen a dot on the rear or handle of the drill, that is aligned with the axis of the chuck. This keeps you true and straight as if there is any depth and you wander back and forth, the core bit binds up and you'll cook an egg on your clutch. I have used this for lots of free-hand drilling/boring,and it is bob on. If you have facility on your level for setting inclination,it will follow that too. Right,i've bored you enough, good luck.
