Hi all.

I'm struggling to find any info online regarding 415v soctet installation and then a few posts from this site popped up so I thought I would ask here.
I have a small industrial unit that has 3 phase power and I want to install some sockets for a few bits of equipment I have bought.
As far as I can see, there hasn't been 415v sockets in here before so I have to start from scratch.
I just want to know how this would be done. I know 240v 13a main have a 'ring', where they are installed in series, is this the case with 415v too?
I am in the process of buying all the wiring etc... so need to know how much and size. I can work out the size of cable once I know what is allowed.
Thanks in advance!
Paul

A radial circuit sized appropriately for the appliance being plugged in to each socket would be pretty normal, unless it is for non-specific/general use ie. 125A supply to a 125A socket for general use but a 80A supply to a 125A socket if for a specific appliance requiring 80A.

Question Do you have a three phase and neutral supply in your building? your description sounds s bit vague.

3 phase wiring is a little more complex than single phase. you need to know if the equipment supplied needs a neutral: the load of each : volt drop: environment. all these will determine the method of installation and the size and type of cable and protective devices required. wirral ain't too far for me. happy to quote you for doing it right.

I didn't expect his many reply so quick!
Right, my experience is not worth talking about really, I'm a mechanical engineer by trade, years ago I had to test generators as part of my job so I have worked with 415v before. It was mainly testing the equipment was supplying the right voltage, replacing sockets, minor wiring repairs etc... That's about it!

As for the use of the sockets:
I need to install 3 or 4, 32 amp sockets that will run welding equipment, a band saw and a lathe.

Building supply:
There is a 415 volt supply into the building, 3 phases, 1 neutral and an earth. The 240v supply comes direct off one of the phases and feeds the sockets and lights. The other 2 phases are not used and end in the supply cupboard.

Hope that helps!

P.S. As for a quote, I have an electrician who I'm hoping can do the actual connecting to the board but I am just trying to save money on the thing I can do if possible. Thanks though!

sockets do come in several shapes and sizes. Some even have isolatos so that you don't have to keep unplugging them. It really is the job of an electrician to correctly install the appropriate socket, wiring and circuit breaker appropriate for the machines you have bought.

Before you do or buy anything, talk to the electrician. It’ll save you money by getting it right first time.

Sorry if you were expecting a step by step guide, I doubt you’ll get one here.

Matey, you are thinking about installing 3 phase with little of no experience - are you mad?

Get Tel to come and quote you - you won't go far wrong when using him.

Just imagine the H&S all over your business when DIY sparking kills or seriously injurys a member of staff!

Nah, just buy what you think you need and have a go at installing it yourself.

After all 415 volts will only kill you stone dead once, you won't feel a thing after that.

nah, it's just quicker and less pain. not recommended for islamic terrorists and paedophiles. too quick.
