Hi all,

I was working in a kitchen the other day installing the electrics when the kitchen fitters gas guy phoned to let him down connecting the new gas hob. I've done many kitchens and heard this problem a few times and it got me thinking. Why can't I do a 5 day course like gas fitters can to do minor gas works like connecting a hob? Works for Part P doesn't it?

What?!?! Take business away from gas fitters?!

How very dare you. We all know that anyone can do electrics but only special people can touch gas.

I should hang my head in shame for even daring to touch these gods of the building trades!! Just wish I could earn what they do and it's not for the want of trying. 20 mins to connect a hob (cup of tea taken into account) ÂŁ60 thank you very much! I tell a customer it's ÂŁ45 to install a new socket and I get "The socket only costs ÂŁ3 in B&Q how can you charge that much?" They forget the cable and time. Cost less than that for the pipe fittings yet customer doesn't bat an eyelid. Mmmm maybe I should re-train

If he only takes 20 mins to connect he is doing it wrong he should be doing a lot more checks etc I have recently looked into this Before doing the 5 day course you have to have two years work experience & a load of quals Investment should be around 5K before getting gas qual then 6 months work before getting gas safe registration

I would advice all sparks to get the qualifications for this gas work, especially if you are younger. With all the training we do it would be something we could manage, finding and doing the courses. Considering you'll have a long carrier ahead of you and it would be a great advantage to swope between jobs. If you're switched on enough to do sparkying then you'll be able to do the gas work. After all that job isn't rocket science. It has been proven sparks are on low money, retrain and give it a go.
