Hello Each

There are some guys in our area (won't say where) who are doing works with no certification, one bloke I spoke to was charged £500 cash for a new CU with no certs. He said the bloke said he does not need them. The sparks (as it were) is obviously not registered and giving the wrong information to the person ordering the works, which could have a devastating effect on his house insurance. Do you think the he should be reported..?

Until the need to post a new thread

Bonjour

I dont know...I dont think I would it report to the police, report the customer I suppose to the LABC. A new CU changed must be registered anyway and it could have an impact on their home insurance. I would point this out to them and offer to certificate the work for them if their guy is not capable. No point getting shirty... the public don't know what that the need certs for a CU...but that would be no defence if their house burnt down which is what I would politely say to the customer.

But if the customer does not want certfication then I would report them...they would tell their friends and families and it starts to raise awareness.

Report them to trading standards?

The MORE people who are armed with information about certificates and the need to use approved people can only be a good thing.

Just last Friday I saw a newish CU, not dual RCD with a date on it for early last year and a couple of months back another with had clearly been installed by somebody who wasn't registered. Not sure what you can do without frightening the client too much.

I guess such work goes on every where.

Hold on, am I missing something here, are you saying that you intend to blackmail the customer? If they give you the work to certify all is well, otherwise you'll be grassing them up. God the Stasi would be proud.

By the way I think that you'll find that you cannot certify someone elses work under part p.

if it's a CU change, then the work is all visible and can be inspected. i think in this case you could do an EIC, but your name is on it, so you'd have to ensure that everything was to regs. and properly installed. the problem would be if, when testing, you found circuit faults e.g. Zs values too high, poor IR readings etc. and would then be in the position of having to advise the client that extra costs were involved.

Say Where, and yes they need reporting.NOW.

Sounds as if those who replied are all in agreement in that I should report them one way or the other. Perhaps we should all report un-certificated or unsafe works, that way there would be more work for us...and the customer will have a good safe job done.

At least it will raise awareness amongst the customor and future customers if we do all report so in future they will get registered and certificated electrical works from men (or woman) who have pride in what they do.

More work for us, less for the rogue trader. Better and safer for the customer..!

So are you reporting them then?

Something about this reminds me of that thread about the doctor who got a handyman to rewire his house.
Call around getting estimates and most are around the £1500 mark, then one offers to do it for £500 cash in hand, no income tax no VAT no money back no guarantee, and most importantly no paper trail.
The customer must surely be aware of what they're letting them self in for; we can warn people of the dangers but a customer has to want a proper job. I wouldn't like to think that the general public's view is that electricians are a bunch of grumpy scaremongers.

Difficult to blame the customer if they have asked the spark and was told they dont need the certificates then I feel bad for them as it sounds like they paid a going rate for a CU change. I think the customer should be informed and the trader be reported to trading standards, and I would ask to be kept informed, take a name from someone that usually keeps them on their toes.

Can anyone of more senior experience state with certainty which bodies sparks should report the villains to on finding dodgy installation or as above hears from customer of potential dodgy installation. Is it just trading standards? Are there others? Is this actually a breach of health and safety legislation and therefore an offence?
