i currently have a 150w pir floodlight which isnt lighting the drive as much as i would like.

so was looking to upgrade to a 500w pir light but after something a little more fancy than the bog standard 500w pir.

it needs to be bright with a pir to shine on the drive any reccomendations please?? it will be wall mounted aswell.

was thinking of a metal halide but dont believe these come with pir and they warm up etc to be bright so dont know if that would work.

i believe they are also expensive to run??

i did look at these energy saving lamps now in place of the halogen, anyone know if these are any good please??

your help and ideas with links if possible would be great.

thank you in advance.

metal halide are a lot cheaper to run than halogen. they come in 70,150,250watt, but you can't use a PIR with them. have you looked at the low energy version of the 500watt flood? Electric Center stock them

500w floods are been phased out at present they are been replaced with 400w and 300w with 200w respectively, but with the eventual phase out of filiment lamps within a few yrs i think you should be looking at alternative low energy options anyway or understand that putting you fitting up may just be a short term option if you choose a flood halogen fitting.

This is the problem the market faces at the moment, there is going to be a gap in the market for a suitable replacement for you PIR halogen flood until the manufacturers come up with a rapid warm up cfl lamp which is PIR friendly, even when this occurs i believe you'll need to fit a couple of these fittings to replace a existing 'old hat' floodlight.

any other ideas please guys?

is there a sort of top of the range halogen?

I can make two suggestions for you, a top of the range PIR floodlight. These have "Knight Rider" LED's that are a love or hate feature. I love them! The other suggestion is a LED PIR floodlight I have not used this particular one yet, but it seems better than the 4.5 watt version. I tried that then got asked to take it down as it was not bright enough.

Just to let you know there are new floodlights now on the market using LED technology. 20W 50W and even 100W LED with give you ample of light and work fine with PIR's, they will also work for 50,000hours and at that reduced electricity consumption are an absolute bargain.
