Hi everyone,

I've carried out a PIR today, and I'm not sure about what code this situation would be/what action is required?
There's a house on a private road which is shared with one neighbor, there's a public wooden post there too. They have run a T&E 2.5mm cable over head supported by (clipped to) a steel catenary wire about 5m overhead across the road; this runs for 50m+ from the house to the post to their stables, without any mechanical protection. In the stable they have 4 lighting points and 4 sockets, as well as two 500W flood lights. This has been protected by a 20A old design RCD on the main DB.
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to go about this.
Thanks

Re: Which code - PIR

T&E is not really suitable for external use due to deterioration from UV light (sun).
It has mechanical protection - it's outer sheath though you need to question if it's suitable for it's installed conditions.
Volt drop would probably be an issue too.

I'd probably code it as a 2.

EDIT - you mention 20A RCD? Is it an MCB or just an RCD? If an RCD, any overload protection?

Thanks for your reply, it is an MCB and RCD together (old design)

Hi P&Q, The running of white or grey T+E outside on a catenary and exposed to UV light would only warrant a PIR Code 4 (EICR C3). If however, the insulation has become embrittled and perished/cracked a PIR Code 2 (EICR C2), if the insulation is broken and the live conductors are exposed and accessible to touch, then a PIR Code 1 (EICR C1) would be appropriate.
In order to determine and advise if the cable run is volt-drop limited, you need to provide us with the earthing arrangement and the relevant test results.

My bafflement increases. I swapped the offending light with one elsewhere on the back of the house - one of those that's on a circuit of its own...
