Hi Guys, new to the forum and would appreciate some advice.

I have a 4000 g pond and I'm intending to heat(temp control really) it this winter as it's far more beneficial for the koi.
I have a 6kw heater and pond is approx 40 mtr from the main consumer unit.
Would it be ok to use 10mm T&E wired directly into 40 amp outlet of RCD and then place it in protective casing en route to shed, where the heater will be.

Basically it's the length of run I'm worried about, will the cable suffice.

ps.... cable will be placed through very strong ducting and fixed to wall approx 9' high, so no danger of anyone touching it anyway
cheers
Carl

I would suggest that with that length of run you will need to make this a TT system otherwise you will get voltage between the earth and the earth from the cable.

It would be much better to install an armour for this but again it depends how you are going to protect it

Is this what I need ?..... will take 85 amp, better to be safe than sorry
10.0mm 6942X 2 core SWA Steel Armoured Cable

I think the 6kw heater takes approx 25 amps....... could the cable I've linked to be wired directly into biggest MCB(40 amp) in house and then to another Consumer unit in shed, and then heater wired into shed Consumer unit ?

the heater is basically like a kettle element on a larger scale, it will call for heat when temperature drops

it's one of these

and here are the manufacturers

thanks for all the help so far ;)

if house supply is tncs you neet to earth swa house side and shed side you need a stake and do not connect swa cpc to shed side
if tns then just swa to cu in shed like you have said

You've lost me with a lot of this ..... can you give idiots guide so that I can get stuff ready for leccy to install, what is tncs, cpc, etc
thanks
Carl

if it helps, the mains cable coming into house is a big armour wired cable(house built circa 1880's) and then meter tails go directly from the main supply to the meter and then from meter to CU

have you got a clamp on the main cable comming into the house with a earth cable or bit of copper in your cace comming from the clamp.
if so this is a TNS
but if u have earth cable comming from main fuse box instead its a TNCS

"could the cable I've linked to be wired directly into".

Thought you said you weren't doing it yourself .... ????

I'm not doing it myself!!.....I wouldn't dream of messing with electric, it's way too risky.....I simply need to know(before calling an electrician) is it this simple ? ......I'm just trying to cut down on costs.

I will be running cable from shed to CU in house, I don't want to run something that's wrong....... trust me, the leccy will be wiring at both ends, no way I'm touching it

ps.... on the mains cable coming into the house there is a clamp attached to the armour wire, and an earth cable attached to that........ the earth goes directly to house CU

So, can the leccy wire directly into 40 amp MCB on house CU and then attach other end to CU in shed.......I will run the cable and he will connect everything

you are ok its a TNS supply so just run the cable.
10mm will be fine i would get 3 core for a **** hot earth to new cu but rember to connect steal wire to eatth to.
use 40A mcb from house if u can but rember to put rcd in shed cu
have you a electric shower cos if 40A on heater 40A on electric shower then make a cup of t and have lights on and have u electric heating.

you will be ok but what power u using with pond heater?
