Hey up Chris, hope you had a good xmas. I could have just phoned you about this, but I thought I'd post it up in here, you can take some pics and show other trainees and mentors your progress.

The story= My best friends parents need some outside lights, an O/S plug socket and two O/S store rooms (one is a toilet) wiring in PVC conduit.

The challenge= I wont tell you what to do, you talk to the customer (friends) and they will tell you what they want, where they want it and what end result they require. It's up to you to design on paper and then make it into reality. No pressure lol. After you have designed it, installed it, you then after do the dead tests, live tests (under my very watchful eye) and then fill in the certs.

The above will teach you:-

1. Communication with customers.
2. Design.
3. Installation (experience with pvc conduit).
4. Testing (and your doing all of it btw)
5. Certification.

I'll set this up in the next couple of weeks if your up for it? I know you will be mate, this is a good opportunity for you to learn in the real world whilst I sit on your shoulder. We should have this done in a day, if not Ill go back and finish off if you cant make it. This is about as close as you get to the level 2 bay in a day exam.

nice one paul. good to see someone like yourself going to the trouble.

Cheers Tel. He is a good lad and he will make a good spark in the future.

After this little job he will fly through the end of year level 2 bay in a day, trust me.

The term getting chucked in at the deep end springs to mind haha bring it on!!!

You do know what stage I'm at on my course....design...holy crap!!!!

The term getting chucked in at the deep end springs to mind haha bring it on!!! Yep, that's where I'm coming from on this job. It's the perfect set up for you. These are not normal customers, they are my very very close friends and very understanding. The man of the house is an university lecturer and will love that you are learning away from college. Ok I know the level that you are at but I would not offer you this if I did'nt think it was within your capability's.

You do know what stage I'm at on my course....design...holy crap!!!! Very easy design mate, Im with you every step of the way and it WILL be perfect when we leave.

Christmas was good, waists a good size bigger after all the good food. Good for you Chris, glad you had a good one.

Waiting for confirmation from HQ lol. I should be able to slot this in within the next 2 weeks, if not a weekend?

Btw this is in York, I'll pick you up and drop you off etc. Go for a drink afterwards and discuss the job. I know you will have loads loads loads of questions but lets just break it down one task at a time mate .

ps. I'll look into your mums heating control system tomorrow and sort it out next weekend with your help.

@ Chris.

Post #6, no we are not going as far as that mate. You should be able to do a diagram in your head, if needed put it down on paper for reference. Stop looking into things ttttooooo far ahead. This is not an exam, just experience.

Hahaha it's what happens when u have my slightly nervous, all the questions I have I want answering NOW :) k mate ill wait for confirmation as to when it is, a weekend is not a problem, just remember monday and wednesday im at college at 6pm, guess I'm just worried about letting u down, I'll look forward to this

that picture was from my college work just wondered if thats what you sparkys draw down when you said to design it or you meant where to put the lights, since i dont know what a design entails i was curious

Finish in 1 day, what we working 6am-10pm haha joke!

I wouldn't worry about the heating, after all they need a new thermostat if the probe on the old one can't be used so until they get the funds for the new one I'd put it on the back burner

Chris I know you wont let me down. You have the perfect real world learning environment. Perfect customers, a half decent sparky sitting on your shoulders and an easy install. I could do all this in one day, together it shall be done in one day 9-5. Very easy steps to remember:-

1. Design it correctly.
2. Install it correctly.
3. Test it correctly.
4. Job done

This is what your trying to achieve, being a full time Electrician. You will be doing things like this on a daily basis. Dont let things like this phase you, its only wires coming from a big box going to a smaller box via a mcb and switch. Everything else is ELECTRICS!

Hope your going to put a CPC with that Neutral? It is a Line conductor after all lol. Only pulling your lg mate

I have'nt forgot about this, I be in touch with you. Been very busy with other things.

unless, physically, that neutral runs through the conduit in such a way that there is already a cpc running along with it (and other cables).

You trying to catch me mate :)
Like tel says which you probably already knew it went through the conduit with other cables, that's just how we have been down to draw it

It was just a piece of conduit running from the CU to the light with 2 pieces dropping down to each switch

Any way it all tested well and didn't go bang when energized so happy days

Just done loop in at the lights and loop in at the switches, was easier for me because I had just done it on a few jobs

Let us know when it is Paul
