I sent an email to a local company last week with a copy of my cv attached offering my services to them.I have lost count of the amount of times I have done this in the past year.
One company phone me up about one hour after sending the email and said they were sorry but they had no jobs at the moment but would keep me on file.
I then had a letter two days later saying the same thing, which is a rare now.I remember back just a few years ago when you got a letter as a matter of course from nearly every company you applied to.
Now it seems to be to much trouble for anyone you apply to,to reply back in any form email, phone or post which is annoying. You will always think back when you hear that company name that they couldn't even reply back to you and you will always think poorly of that company in the future

Its great that they replied back.

I have had the same experience to an extent.

I applied to many jobs last year. Probably 50 jobs.

I got one phone call, one interview, and I got the job.

your welcome to the job if you want it...

In the past year I have sent out about 1200 cv's and applied for more than 300 jobs and have had two interviews, which I never heard back from the companies interviewing me.
I have been offered another three interviews but they phoned up and want you to be avalible the next day which you can't always do.
I have been offered many poorly paid very shout term agency jobs which I have knocked back.Or been offered jobs working away from home for basic hours and no digs(no chance)
For example last night at half past five I had a phone call from an agency I registered with last year wanting me to work today for one day only.I said fine what is the rate etc.The reply was ÂŁ12 an hour and you have to pay ÂŁ23 to a payment company to get paid plus petrol makes it not worth taking.I said pay me PAYE and i will take the job and he said no.
I was also offered an interview at half past four at night for the next day in the middle of Ireland for the next morning 9;30 no chance in getting there at that short notice or splashing out about ÂŁ200 just to go to an interview.I asked for them to book me some flights and an hire car so i could get to the interview, the woman laugthed at me then put down the phone.
This is what you are up against just trying to get some work to pay the bills.
On reflection of the past year I can understand how people are long term unemployed it is very easy to get fed up trying and getting no response day after day, week after week and month after month.

I think its more to do with the general attitude of most companies/bosses towards the workforce in this country, due to the recession hype, cuts, driving down wages and instilling fear and a dog eat dog back stabbing mentality. "Not worth the admin or paper to reply" says it all.
Having said that you should never take their lack of response personally and persevere odds are it will pay off eventually. I would also make a point of telephoning the non responders or even writing to request feedback on your applications as out of sight is out of mind and if you keep knocking on the door someone might just open it for you.
The other thing is not to isolate yourself from the working world/ environment even if it means taking a job at tescos or doing some voluntary work as i'm a firm believer in one door leads to another and staying in circulation will improve your overall chances and your state of mind. You cannot under estimate unemployment and the psychological threat to success that it causes. For me personally here are two of my favorite pearls of wisdom that I picked up from a couple of pensioners, both in their 90's who when asked what their secret to a long and happy life was replied in turn "Its the doing it that counts" and "Accepting Changes"
Good Luck:eek:

In a previous existance I worked in a company that got 10-20 letters a week. We had no jobs available. At first I tried to respond with a standard letter but when working 12+ hours a day 6 days a week that became too much. I filed them for a while but then realised if there was a vacancy how would I read the hundreds of letters and without wasting a considerable amount of time on people without any of the skills required for a particular job and assuming that they still had not found one

I have also been in the position of not getting any response to applications even for advertised vacancies but being realistic given todays pressure on business it is understandable given some jobs attact 100's of applications. Not giving feedback on an interview though would indicate that you would not want to work for them.

Do not give up trying though, eventually the timing will be right.

Just a thought, would you ask a girl out by email ?
if you can't be bothered to leave your house to get a job what makes you think an employer is going to be bothered with you.

I get loads of cv's sent every year after exam time, the only people i have taken on, have taken the time to hand write or have rung me up or in some way gone a bit further than most do.
I even have mothers emailing me for a job for their little johnny. Honestly........
