Hi, im an 18 year old and ive almost finished my 2nd year at college, I need to find an apprenticeship to continue onto level 3, what kind of money can I expect to be getting daily if i manage to find one?

If i cant get an apprenticeship by level 3 comes along, what kind of money could i expect on average to just be working as an electricians mate/ working with electrician whilst i keep searching for one.

Also, a bloke in our college class has managed to find a few days work with a company but claims the electrician he works with "didnt bother" with level 3 yet works for a company. So can you even call yourself an electrician legally without passing level 3?

Thanks in advance

I'm fairly sure you can work for a company with just your level 2 but a lot of electricians regret that in the future. obviously the more Qualifications you have the more appealing you'll be to a company.

I think around the ÂŁ50-ÂŁ60 a day mark depending on what area your in. Others may disagree, I've only just qualified so more experienced people will have a better idea.

It's isn't really about the money, it's about what you could learn from the person taking you on that counts

Ps as I said I have just finished my level 3.
if you need any help with college work I'll be more than happy to help. Although I won't give you the answers I'll try and point you to correct areas in the books.

That's what I was on and that's also what my friend from college was on (different companies) We were classed as apprentices.

The more you earn someone normally the more you get paid. But there are so many variables. The key point for me was how much I learnt from my boss

Hey there,

Well you're over 18 now so the minimum wage will apply to you on your apprenticeship which is better than the ÂŁ2.60 you'd get if you were a minor. An apprenticeship employer will pay you just as any other worker for the time you work. So what is the average minimum national wage? That's what you'd get and you could probably expect the same working as an electrician's mate. You've gotta pay your dues for a few years but the picture gets better as you get more experience and training. Good luck m8.

Id agree with simon, you ll probably only get minimum wage to start with for most people but it all depends on who you get on with some big companies might pay more but i wouldnt go expecting it. probably just get ÂŁ4.98 ph (min wage for 18-21) while your paying your dues.

You can legally call yourself whatever you want pal. You dont legally have to have any qualifications to describe yourself as an electrician.
For the record, I know a guy who didnt bother with level 3. Best electrician I know, was running his own firm with 3 employees by age 24. You'll probabaly struggle to get a job though, whatever your quals, less quals you got, harder you'll struggle.
Another point I'd make, is that if I was employing somoene, I'd far sooner take on a guy with 2 years experience as a domestic mate and no quals than a guy with 2 years quals and no experience.
