I've been asked to install some 'Spotlamps' to light-up a high feature on the side of a church - approx 15metres away from the light source which can be mounted onto an easily accessible flat roof.
Notes:-
  • It needs to be LED as it will illuminate throughout the night and energy costs are important.
  • The illuminated feature is approx 15 metres away from the light source - hence the need for Spotlamp/s with a narrow beam spread. It is not possible to get any closer!
  • The LED floodlamps available from suppliers, have too wide a distribution of light. This means that it doesn't pick out the special feature.
Have looked on the Internet but can't see anything suitable. Can anybody out there offer any advice from having to do similar work?

Try looking for marine spot lights or search lights, these can give a focussed beam but it may be too small for the object to be lit.
The other possibility (if they are available in exterior grade) would be theatre lighting cans.

I was talking to a prospective customer recently about an application that would have benefited with a smaller angle flood. Looks like there's a gap in the market for directional outdoor LED lighting. Most LED floods have around 120deg spread, which is too much for some applications.

You need to be looking at the Meyer super light nano 4, very bright, very high quality German architectural lights, available with tight beam angle.

Used them at prince Edwards theatre inside the 4 external torcheres and side wall lights to create a vertical coloumb of light when we refurbished them 2 years ago, they would be just the job, the ones the in the pic were only the nano 3 and you can see how bright they are.

They also have a new product the nightspot A2 LED might be even better, plenty photometric data available.

That type of lamp would be perfect. I'll look on the Internet to see what's available.
Thanks for the advice.

No problem I have no idea about cost as it was never an issue with most of the projects. Commercial lighting system ltd seem to be there distibuters in the uk.

Cost would be an issue here if it was high. The Church has just recently undergone a major refurb and the community have been generous with donations because the work was desperately needed.
Feature illuminating the cross on the side the church is hardly critical work, so I would need to be mindful about this on my quote!!

The benefit is you should only need one fitting so hopefully not to bad. I can't see them being any more than ÂŁ500, the lighting required here is quite specialised and if they were to contact someone like Commercial lighting systems they would find their selves paying through the roof for a solution, but as you say not critical.
