Adding a new consumer unit

Hi all,

I'm currently studying for my C&G lvl2 and I was talking to my brother in law last night who informed me he had an additional consumer unit in his houseand that it was fed by a 6mm T+E from a 40amp MCB in the original CU. Surely that can't be wise?
So now I'm curious, what are the general rules for wiring up an additional consumer unit?

You can run an additional CU as a submain but unless his 6mm is clipped direct along its whole length (surface in other words) the MCB is over rated!

So long as the total current in the CU including unused ways can not exceed 32A.
