Hello

I have a spur off the ring main via a junction box which supplies a double socket in the kitchen. I want to add a spur from this to supply a single socket for a fridge.

Is it possible to add a fused connection unit into the existing spur wiring prior to the double socket , then take a spur straight from the double socket to the single socket for the fridge ?

Or can I replace the double socket with a FCU and single socket combination (which should fit into the existing double back box) , then take a spur for the fridge from that ?

Thanks
David

IMO I would fit a spur just after the junction box and then feed both sockets of the spur.

If your burying the cable then of course you need to ensure that if it's not buried lower than 50mm or any other of the ways in reg 522.6.6, it will need RCD protection, and you can give it that with a RCD FCU.

What would be a good debate is, say your running surface and you label that socket as Fridge only, IMO it would not need RCD protection at all.

Unless you have a dual back box, then you can not fit a single socket and a FCU into a back box..............do you have a dual back box

Yes you can. Put a FCU before feeding the sockets.

The number of sockets outlets supplied from a FCU is dependent on the load, having taken diversity into account.

Malcolm beat me to it again.

As you don't know what the 17th is ...............I suppose Part P and notification is also somethnig that will be new

Yes , your second example is the backbox I have , many thanks for your help.

Cheers
David

Ok then .................

So your have a double box and wanted to fit a single socket and an FCU into it ......good luck with that.

You don't know what the 17th is .................so you will not know about a MEIWC or anything like that ....................

The Part P part you never mentioned ......................

Last piece of advise that I hope you take ..................employ a competant electrician to do it for you.

Thanks Paul , but out of interest , what's the 17th ??

Cheers
david

The 17th ed of the wiring regs for the UK. The electricians bible.

I made the mistake of assuming that you are an electrician due to your good description and diagram. You need to test this alteration to ensure it is safe for purpose and that needs an electrian. It's not just about putting a few wires together.

Malcom , just been doing some research , I now realise any additions or alterations to existing wiring in kitchens and bathrooms needs notification and has to comply with BS standards and needs inspection. , Sorry, I wasn't aware of that before , so will look into getting it professionally done.

Good man .......................it will be safer for you and your family, and if you get a scheme electrician that notifies his work it will be maximum about 2-3 hours work so not at all dear.

Get 2 or 3 quotes, don't be frightened to ask the guy for his qualifications, in fact they will respect you more for that, only a non qualified guy will kick up, and if you think it is dear or not done right your more than welcome to come on and ask, and any guy on here will help
