Adding Switch to Outdoor Light

A

Andrew Groom

Hi,
First post on here, so rather unexperienced with the site!

To introduce myself, im at College studying Electrical Installation Level 2, but that doesent mean i know everything so im coming here for advice!

My grand-dad has a light that he has always had in his garage. He never used to use it, but now due to failing health he got rid of his car and now is using the garage to store his mobility scooter. In the mornings and evenings he wants to put his light on. It is a plug in light, with flex cable that goes from the garage and into the downstairs toilet and plugs straight in to a 13 Amp socket, which is high up the wall and he cant reach.

My initial thought was to keep the light plugged in perminatley, and put in a IP 55/56 (Leakey Roof!) switch in line with the light and then he can just knock it on or off when he comes in or out of the garage.

I went out and bought one today but im confused as to the actual wiring of the light. In aware that indoors in a situation where a switch is used as the main way of turning the light on and off, there is no neural as there is no need, so neutral is used as switch live. But is this any different with what im trying to do? As the plug has its Neutral and Live, both going to the light. The switch has terminals A1 A2 and L.

Thanks in Advance,
Andrew

Exactly. There's no point in having a switch wire as you don't have other lights (which require power) to worry about. Just switching in line in this case would be fine.
