Hi folks

Looking for some career advice. I am 17th Edition electrician with ECS, however i only have 3 months post apprenticeship experience gained 6 years ago. Long story short, i left to go travelling, dabbled in too much of a rock n roll lifestyle, became unwell and got signed off.

Im ready to get my life sorted and get the career back on track but was wondering if i should pursue 6-12 months as a mate first as im still wet behind the ears and inexperienced or should i say i have served my time, i am qualified and jump back in at the deep end and hope i work with some sympathetic sparks who will help me?!

Thanks in advance

Time on the tools is needed. If you get in with a good set of lads friendships start and the workplace is a much better place to turn up to every morning.

Just dont go to bed with the bosses daughter, you may end up marrying her like I did!

Agree with the above,if you don't have the experience then naturally you're going to be a bit on the slow side, some guys may resent working with you if you're getting the same wages but only doing half the work.Get some experience then build up from there.

Just dont go to bed with the bosses daughter!
I did that as an apprentice, and was caught "in flagranté delicto" in their garage with her when he came back to get something he'd forgotten.
@OP, I think it's great that you've realised that you could be very rusty mate, the problem you may have if you go on site as a fully fledged electrician is that your rustiness could be seen as incompetence, once you have that reputation it's very difficult to shake off.
In your position I'd approach some agencies to get a bit of time as a mate, you can explain your situation to them and they'll get you a start if they can. After all, you'll be yet another one allowing them to feed. After a few months and once you feel more comfortable then start applying for proper electrician's jobs.
It never leaves you fully by the way. You'll soon start to remember how things are done and how they should be. Good luck

Caught in the garage! So romantic!

At least I got caught in the bosses bedroom with his daughter. Hit me so hard I saw stars for a week! Happily married for 11 years now, but the father in-law still hates me. No father needs to see his daughter in those kind of positions!!!!

Scared him for life or may be your mother in law can't do those positions for him:biggrin::biggrin:

Top tip for you. Dont bed the bosses daughter.

Rest of it is just electrics, get a mates job and build yourself up from there. It never leaves you. Crack on.

And certainly don't bed the boss!
I did this a few years ago (boss was female) and when we stopped seeing each other work life got tougher.

Moral of the story is don't poke the payroll
