hi to all,
i have a few questions regarding garden lighting just want some advice. my brother wants me to install some garden lighting he has not stated what type yet, says he doesnt want solar as already got these possibly fixed to fence posts or in borders not sure so i just want to get a heads up on some things as i have only ever done floods for show homes in the borders using swa of time switches I am currently not registered with a governing body but hoping to use this and a consumer unit change to register with elecsa and for the assessment any advice cheers eg

1. does all garden lighting have to be notified, do pre wired sets also have to be notified
2. whats the best wiring methods eg 6 amp RCBO, 1.5mm swa buried with waterproof jbs or is it ok to use artic flex in plastic conduit fixed to fencing if poss, depending on where he wants them fixed and the type
3. does anyone know if i can register with elecsa and use this job and the complete ccu change, tails bonding etc and notify elecsa instead of having to notify labc and then registering with elecsa

All outdoor lighting and power installations are classed as "special installations" and are notifiable I'm afraid.

The pre-wired sets thing relates to ELV downlights, not outdoor lighting.

Yes you can use the job for assessment. Just make sure everything is spot on.

cheers jud i had looked at a lot of other posts on this and they seemed to be under the impression that you can use the elv garden lighting and not notify
so all the people that buy from b&q should be notifying?

I will ask our kid what type of lighting he wants which would be helpful and he has said i can do the ccu change to get rid of a existing wylex fuseboard and transfer to 17th edition compliant board

From App. Doc. P

Outdoor lighting and power installations are special installations. Any new work in, for example, the garden or that involves crossing the garden is notifiable.

If in doubt ring Elecsa and see what they think.

cheers jud,
I believe ya as you are in the game and i have been involved 24yrs on and off but never finished my apprenticeship so last year paid a obscene amount of moneyÂŁ4020 for 17th, 2377, 2393 building regs and part p logic level a,b,c award and megger regs ,osg basic tools, i have also just done 2391 course exam was june 10th waiting for results:eek: I want to get registered then set up and hopefully do 2356 nvq or similar even willing to do 2330 but they getting rid so dont know which course i will av to do to eventually after more than 24yrs be able to call myself a fully qualified approved electrician but as i am a full time carer for mrs its been hard to get help and advice
I bow to your knowledge as i am still learning and probably always will be at this rate i be retiring as i finaly get fully qualified
thanks for the advice matey i will contact elecsa but to check that this will be enough work for assessment cheers jud

Hi jud
just had a look at part p doc you are correct
page 9
section G. outdoor lighting and power installations are special installations any new work in ,for example, the garden or involves crossing the garden its notifiable.

section H. the installation of fixed equipment ie within the scope of part p, even where the final connection is by a plug and socket outlet. however work is notifiable ONLY if it involves fixed wiring and the installation of a new circuit or the extension of a circuit in a kitchen or special location or associated with a special location which this is

section K. the installation of prefabricated " modular" systems ( for example kitchen lighting systems and armoured GARDEN CABLING) linked by plug and socket connectors is not notifiable provided that the products are CE-marked and that any final connections in KITCHENS are made to existing connection units or points( possibly a 13 Amp socket outlet )

no wonder i was confused eh mate section K contradicts section G
