MARKYB

Hi all,

Name is Mark, run a plastering business in north Birmingham.

Have just built a bungalow at the rear of my property for my own use and want to run electric to it from the main house. I have a 30 and 15 amp free in the house fuse board and need to run 175 feet to get to the bungalow. All I will be running in the bungalow is lighting, TV / PC / DVD, microwave and fridge. Would like to pop an electric shower in as well, not sure I am going to have the power though?

So be grateful for advice on what to run down from the fuse board, doubt it will be 2.5 will it?! I don't need to run armoured as cable is going into steel.

cheers, Mark

I`m assuming you`ve done this work on a Buiding Notice, Mark, & if you`ve done all the work yourself then credit to you for being multi-skilled. It really takes something to be proficient at so many different trades to get such a job completed to a high standard.
It may well be appealing (& self satisfying) for you to complete the task by installing the electrics too. However, many involved in the construction industry undervalue the complexities of electrical work & don`t fully appreciate all the criteria that a fully versed spark has to take into account. We don`t study for years because we`re slow at learning - it`s just that there`s so much to learn...In short, there`s far more to our job than at first meets the eye.
No wish to sound unfriendly, Mark, but my advice is to get a qualified electrician in to do the work . Your original post immediately exposes the limitations of your knowledge, & even if you`re having an LABC appointed Inspector check the work at completion it will have to be as per BS7671 in every respect.
I wish you well with it, & I, & others here would happily comment on any proposal you may wish to post up if you require re-assurance that a spark is going about the job correctly.
As i say - good luck with it

Sort of in agreement, but if you are thinking about putting an electric shower in you are going to need a sizeable cable with the length of run and the heater load. I would have thought you may even be better off to install a hot water tank with immersion to keep the load down as even the 30 amp circuit will be insufficient

Thanks to both that have replied thus far.
Yes its is the electric side of this that is perplexing me at the moment, basically it is what I have out of the main home fuse board , of which I only have a 30 and 15 free and the length of the cable run. I don't profess to be an electrician, hence the advice question. I have run a ring main around the bungalow, it's just getting power to it now. As far as the shower goes I have shelved that as I now have a solid fuel burner for hot water. So just need to know what size cable for the run from the 45 I have available house end to get down to the bungalow to run a TV/DVD, lighting (6 of but obviously not all on at same time) a microwave and fridge. Obviously the fridge will be on all of the time and the TV will be on when the fridge is, the microwave at bursts too! So can I drop from the house board to that length of what ever mm wire to the bungalow and if so, which mm wire should I drop down there?

Thanks for the comments, building the bungalow was just something to do between jobs. We do a lot of garage conversions and extensions in Birmingham. I'm a plasterer because I found bricking wasn't paying its way at the time, so plastering basically was the bigger earner. I have been plastering now for 10 years and still turn over a pretty good rate even in this recession. I am starting a course to be a qualified electrician in September, the knees and the shoulders are starting to go now! My brother 1 brother is a qualified plumber and gas fitter, my other brother is also a plasterer, so the aim is to get my electrics and then keep them both employed with work off me, well thats the plan!

Thanks for the replies so far to my electrical prob, other advice gratefully accepted. PLease remember that this bungalow is on my land and I am not looking to have the electric board run me a new power supply. It is private use, as the guy that owns the land next to me will not sell me the access land to enable me to sell it off as a property, so I am not forking out until he pops his clogs and future owners are more willing to lose some land for cash!

Cheers Mark.

these can be swapped for different sized mcb's so you are not limited by these. i would suggest paying a qualified sparky to at the least advise you on this job who can actually have a look at the job and not just offer advice blind over the net.

Thanks, I prob could at changing mbc's, but I am working on 45 out at the moment, so just
need to know what mm wire to run down. I am dropping a fuse board in at bungalow end.

Thanks, Mark

Being a sparks is no good for the back and knees either mate, I have phsyio once a fortnight on my back and I'm only 28, lol ;) (Not all electrics, mostly building injury!!)
