Hi all, its probably been asked but the more I search for a definitive answer the more I get confused.

Basically I am qualified to level 3, have 17th edition and 2392. I was working full time as a electrician untill a year ago when I got offered a better job to retrain as a gas fitter.

I've recently been contacted by a friends of friends looking for some electrical work to be carried out in there home.
I miss the work and would happy for the income on the side.
The problem obviously arises when it comes to signing off work.
Obviously I am not a member of nic etc. so is there no way I can sign off my own work? It just seems crazy to me that I have showed my compentence, paid through the nose to get qulifications, spent years of my life learning the trade but now I can't utilise these skills because I can no longer take a test sheet into the office at the end of the day and get somebody else to counter sign it.

Any advice on this would be a great a help. Many thanks.

There are 2 ways to notify any applicable electrical work...

1. is as you've said, become a member of a self certification scheme.

2. notify building control before work is started and they will visit at various stages of the job (depending on size), appoint someone to carry out the insp & test on their behalf & issue a compliance certificate upon completion.

Option 1 will cost around ÂŁ400 per year, option 2 can cosy anywhere between ÂŁ60 & ÂŁ300 per job!

ah I think it takes the mick. Fair enough there might be people out there that do stuff wrong, but it just makes life difficult for the rest of us.
Im not likely to have enough work going on on the side to justify become a member of a self certification scheme (plus the company I work for ban you from working other jobs on the side) and having building control come out will be incovienant and either bump my prices up or cut into my profits. :/

heard napit do a scheme for ÂŁ208 with a maximum of 8 notifications a year wether this true not deffo it was my tutor at college he is going for his remewal and as he doesnt do that many a year now he says napit have this option
